Wow! What a race!!!! So much action and drama, and so pleased to see Ricciardo take the win, with some beautiful overtakes. Gasley joins the as×h×le club, for causing the safety car that allowed the founder member of the club to reinforce his presidency of the club. Mind you I thought Hamiltons move(s) on Verstappen through turns 4 and 5 were a bit rugged. But lots and lots of other things made it a great race. That's two in a row - this could be "the best season......ever".

It wasn’t bad at all was it and, much as I dislike safety cars influencing results, there’s no doubt that the race came alive afterwards.
Daniel was quite superb, no one overtakes like this guy.....I hope we see him as champion one day. Muted from Ferrari and Hamilton and disappointed to see that Kimi is so far the No2 that he’s probably only the No3, kept out to disrupt Bottas only, he’d have been nowhere but for the safety car.
I wonder if Bottas would have held Seb back if the safety car hadn’t come out? Seems Ferrari had the pace but were undone tactically today......cool or hot conditions, the pace advantage is definitely with the red cars at present.
Seb was magnanimous after the race, though I expect he was seething internally....classy.
Pretty good overall 👍😁

The regulations as written serve to enable the undeniable (albeit misguided) aerodynamic genius of Adrian Newey and the result is that many race deciding passes now take place in the pits. The crucial timing and execution of passes are done as often by a computer, often several thousand miles away, as by driving skill. A brave new world or hybrid video game? Newey is definitely a genius, but only one of many currently, and in the history of F1. Maximising aerodynamic effeffectiveness has been a fundamental part of F1 since the beginning. Look at the advantages Frank Costin was able to give to Vandwall, Maseratti, Lotus and March back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. In those days it was about minimising drag, these days it's downforce. And where did it all go after F1 designers picked up on Jim Hall's ground effects ideas? Ground effects was one of the many golden eras of F1, but it didn't make the racing particularly close. It obviously is difficult to follow and pass with these high downforce cars, except (apparently) if you're in the mid-field, or a F2 or F3 race where they seem to be able to do both those things. So, yeah, I agree change the regulations so that cars can follow more closely, but geniuses like Newey will still be employed by the teams to make them as aero effective as possible.

Welcome Jim 👍 A very good post....Newey isn’t the enemy, the regulations are. If you’re a fan of Thomas Dolby (I am), seek out the Adam Buxton podcast....he’s had him as a guest a couple of times - interesting man. Thank you Jamie, excellent choice of avatar. It looks like we have tthree things in common, fans of Jim Clark, Thomas Dolby and podcasts. I'll have a look for the Adam Buxton podcasts. Cheers

Just back home and the title runs: "Ricciardo wins".
That's all I need to know.
Top bloke, top driver.

Verstappen. Where do we start with Verstappen?
He has become the epitome and the summa of all the dishonest racing accumulated in the last three decades, introduced by Senna and Schumacher.
He is very, very lucky not to have been around in 1978.

Haven't watch the race, but can I finally say that if the safety car is out - it shouldn't NEVER be unless the third world war is deflagrating somewhere on track - pit stops should NOT be allowed? They only distort races. No merit.

Lots of excitement in China and big congrats to Daniel! I agree the safety car had a big influence on the outcome but it usually does. The Ferrari was the fastest car but I don't understand how they gave the initiative away to Mercedes. Strategy is not Ferrari's strongest point right now and that could cost them dearly. Doesn't take anything away from Danny's great ride, he took maximum advantage of the situation and made no mistakes. In big contrast to Max! My young countryman is going through a bit of a difficult phase at the moment. To his credit, he did admit he made a big mistake hitting Vettel. To my knowledge the first time he admitted a mistake. Threw away a possible win or at least a podium. I still think Max is more clever than his father but this was not good. Anyway, the racing was close, regardless of the safety car and there is no way knowing who is going to win the next race which is very good. Where was Lewis by the way?

From the BBC website, asked if he needed to calm down, he said: So just unfortunate he's hit a car every race this season so far. He's a chip off the old block alright.

To quote the brilliant Casey Stoner from MotoGP when Rossi smacked into him for the umpteenth time; "Your ambition outweighs your talent".
Never a truer word said!

I have now watched the highlights curtesy of the adverts that dominate the programme on C4, bless, but I also listened to the race on Aunty on the radio this morning, all you heard of the race was Hamilton, Max, tyres and pit-stops. In the race the Grand Prix grid and any would be racing drivers were given a fantastic lesson by one team in how to overtake in one car, and how not to in another, Daniel was great, he drove with such skill I can just see him in a Merc - not a Ferrari next year, and Max, less so, ah the impetuousness of youth
So the 3rd GP is done a great result for a real racer with I think etiquette and skill, it seems funny how he seems to be almost sidelined at RB and if he does go then does Ghastly or Brendan get the drive?
What are the odds on Hamilton retiring at the end of the year? or going to Williams, if there is a Williams, that is tragic and really does take one back to pre 78- Is it better not to be there than suffer the insult of pay as you drive 'people'
It is still so sad to see these lumbering beasts hurtle around circuits and whilst I marvel at Daniel, I despair when i look at them, maybe i am just better off listening to the radio
