Great pic of JYS at Zandvoort 1968. Matra got a 1/2 that day with JP Beltoise second with the V12. Great victory for Dunlop as well. JYS was driving with a cast on his left hand due to a broken scaphoid bone in his left wrist but the wet conditions made driving easier. I think he was shattered at the end of the race though.

A wonderful new banner image and informative post from Rob!
Same year. Same car and driver. Same tyres. More downforce. An even greater margin of victory at the Nurburgring.
Jackie Stewart was amazing!

A nice photo of Lauda at Anderstorp, Sweden, in the middle of June, 1978. It was a perfect Scandinavian summer day; I remember it clearly still now. It was race No. 8 out of 16 that season, so it was exactly in mid-season.
Swedish midsummer ...

It's Niki Lauda's birthday today. He would have turned 75.

Matt Bishop posted Niki's birthday anniversary on twitter the other day, I always thought Niki underrated - especially the 1983 season a picture I would have far preferred than one of Gordon's funnies. Which deprived my Loti of another victory.
That is a beautiful picture of the last great Tyrell in my mind, and always conjures up Jean's heroics against Ayrton -

Ref. Jean Alesi: Interesting that Jean Robert Alesi's real (birth) name was Giovanni Roberto Alesi, being a "full-blooded" Italian, with both parents hailing therefrom.
Of other "non-Italian" Ferrari drivers with Italian roots, Carlos Reutemann had an Italian mother. Juan Manuel Fangio also had Italian roots, with Italian grandparents.
Were there other "non-Italians" Ferrari drivers with Italian roots, I wonder ...?

Although his heritage was Italian, Clay Regazzoni was Swiss, born just across the border close to Milan.
The Swiss national flag was always prominent on his helmet

Mario Andretti! Born in Montona, Italy (now Croatia). And regarding Jean Alesi, he named his son Giuliano so a return to an Italian name.

Another one; Felipe Massa is of Italian descent. His grandparents come from the town of Cerignola, in the province of Foggia, Italy. .

And another Brazilian. Rubens Barrichello is partly of Italian descent. The paternal side of his family comes from Veneto, Italy (from the town of Riese, in the province of Treviso).

and lest we forget at least three Scottish Drivers, Dario and Marino Franchetti and their cousin Paul Di Resta Yes there were more of Italian descent. But I don't believe the Franchittis nor Di Resta ever were Ferrari works drivers. Dario did love his Ferraris though.

Nice pic of Ickx in the 312B during the 1970 Austrian GP, which he won with Regga second. The headline in the MotorSport report by DSJ, was Forza Ferrari, A phrase I have never forgotten.
