Summer break is almost over and what better track to resume racing than the glorious Spa Francorchamps! The big question must be: can Ferrari finally capatalize on the fact they have the fastest car? Errors and bad luck have prevented them from winning the last two races and Lewis Hamilton is in top form. It will surely be close again between the top two and maybe Red Bull can do something special with thousands of Dutch fans cheering for Max. It's going to be an orange party again! And there could be rain...

My heart says Kimi, however with his run of luck it is unlikely even though he is on a good streak of form.
It must be Vettel's to loose considering all of the web experts are saying the Ferrari is the best car. A Scuderia win would be ideal for two reasons, firstly as René will be there; and secondly it would be good to see Tonto's expression afterwards.
Still hating the "Toilet Seat"............

despite my misgivings of the current F1 'spectacle' [and the detestable toilet seat] it feels really good that we are at Spa, I often get into conversations with people who want to see a GP and I always point them towards Spa - although please can we tighten Eau Rouge again, but even watching these behemouths up there must be an awesome sight and i am thinking- maybe next year I may pop over...
I have gone for Seb, i would love Kimi to do it but suspect he may be capable but not neccessarily allowed
and, it's on C4 live, must be the last time? that is sad and further adds to F1's demise - although please C4 let Lee be the main lead - please .....

The mid-season break has been pretty tumultuous, with big announcements of driver signings, the change of ownership of Force India, and the teams will have been readying their next round of upgrades. Spa is normally an exciting race, and with all of the above factors in play, this race weekend should provide lots of on and off track excitement. I'm okay with the appearance of these cars designed by science, with safety a priority. They're not pretty, but we've got the grid girls for that.....oh yeah, maybe not. Lol :-)

Is that Piers Courage?

Carl, no it's Jack Brabham in the BT11 Climax in 1965. The track is no longer the grand old Spa of old, I agree. But this shorter version (since 1983) is still a magnificent race track as you say. I've seen a few tracks and Spa is just special. When you stand at the foot of the Eau Rouge, you can't believe how steep it is!

JC, yep I will be there. For the friday I have a grandstand ticket at La Source hairpin so hopefully I can take some nice pics. I will skip the saturday this year and on sunday I will go with my brother in law and my neighbour so that should be fun. We have plain general admission tickets but they are just as good at Spa. Only need to be there very early because it will be packed! Don't like the toilet seat either but as Kimi would say, it is what it is.

I don't always recognize Brabham when he's sitting back in his seat. At first I thought it might be Bruce McLaren!

I should have known it was Brabham, as I have this great photograph of his teammate that year, also at La Source.
And one from long ago... Cheers, Carl

Thanks Carl!
That is a great photo of Dan Gurney in the Brabham and the photographer didn't need a big zoom lens to make it! Standing inside La Source corner must have been great. Not possible anymore.

That photo of Dan must be from 1964, the year of his monumental drive where he demolished the field including the greatest ever Jimmy Clark, only to run out of fuel handing the lead to Bruce McLaren, and then Bruce ran dry. Jim picking up a win on a circuit he loathed but also excelled; the Lotus 25B was not going well at Spa in '64 lacking top speed. Colin Chapman even fitted the car with narrower wheels and tyres from the earlier cars in an attempt to get more top speed. Dan's drive was mighty and it must have been his huge speed that caused the Brabham to run dry, it also says something for Mr Gurney and the Brabham that it was so fast as Big Dan wasn't the most aerodynamic in those little cars. I hope that it remains dry for you René as it can be very wet at Spa, as i have found myself in years past, and as i have mentioned before check to see if the cows are laying down . Here is a picture from the past that is truly classic Spa Francorchamps, very wet and in the days of rustic charm,

René, a most spectacular shot of Brabham in the La Source corner. Here's one of Fangio at the same place, about a decade earlier. No "Armco" at this time! Have a great trip to Spa!

Rene, hope you have a wonderful time and I look forward to seeing some more marvelous photo's. says a slightly envious Chris B. who must get back out there,
John Charles, 1964 GP was a very strange race and underlined Jimmy's comments about Dan, my favourite race has to be 1965 - that must have been so scary, but so much in control, off-hand I cannot recollect how much the F1 cars weighed fully laden but the power to weight ratio and skinny tyres on the fearsome Spa - no wonder Jimmy hated the place
wonderful photo of el maestro Mikael, there is something very evocative about those Mercs with Fangio driving, with the forearms working away and the concentration - you could almost feel it, no wonder Stirling thought he was the best
I have some close-up pictures of the BT33 and how they drove these things at 170mph+ is clearly beyond me, they are so flimsy and at Spa, they must have had testicles of steel

I confused Jack Brabham for Piers Courage, 1964 for 1965, and boldly kissed a strange woman on the sidewalk I mistook for a paramour.
In the attached picture, the blurring of the London Rowing Club symbols on Graham Hill's helmet and the farmer's serious gaze suggest heads turned in mutual wariness. Did the World Champion once plow across the farmer's field and stampede his cows, affecting lap times and milk production as all concerned became more watchful?
Cheers, Carl
