Although I find it hard to get excited about these current contraptions that pass themselves of as Formula One "cars" I do take a passing interest in some of the technicalities.
I have read, for what it is worth, in some news feeds that there are two possibilities that make the Ferrari so competitive at present. One is the apparent ploy of making the single battery believe that it is in fact two power cells, one charged by one of the MGU thingies and the other charged by the other variant of MGU thingie, sorry for the rather agricultural expression of detail but to be honest I cannot bother myself with finding out which is which!
The other factor as René mentions above is the fact that Ferrari have found a way of drag reduction on the rear wing while on the straight. According to an article, in the rather obnoxious site that has the same name as the one we all migrated from, that explains the theory that Ferrari have found a way of "blowing" the rear wing by using the waste gate to do the job, they highlight the fact that the waste gate outlet pipes sit one above the other on top of the exhaust.
It is either that or they have a little person hidden in the rear bodywork with a pair of straws blowing like mad when the vehicle is on the straight. So if you come across an advert from Mercedes Benz requiring applications from very small people you will know they are on to something.

Just read from a news feed that McLaren have signed James Key as F1 Technical Director and that following Tim Goss' departure Matt Morris has also just resigned. Hopefully Toro Rosso will still have some good people in place as Key had done some good work for them over the past few years. I still think the wrong guys are resigning, or should I say there is one in particular who should be departing. It seems that McLaren/Brown have shot themselve in the foot (again): It now appears that Red Bull wants Key to fulfil his contractual obligations to Toro Rosso. "He has a long-term contract with Toro Rosso," Marko told Autosport. "We had a discussion with Zak, and instead of coming back to us, there was a press release done. "So we'll stick to the contract, and McLaren will have to wait for quite a long time." Marko made it clear that he expects Key to see out his contract, which is understood to stretch to 2020.Source: Autosport How did Zak make his fortune?

honestly if it wasn't so tragic to see this once revered team become so shambolic it would be amusing - what;s the saying? a catalogue of cock-ups?'

have a lovely break Rene - enjoy and have fun! I've arranged for Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel to slow briefly during the race and wave to Rene and his brother-in-law in the grandstand. Rene needs to pay attention and quickly return the salute.
It would be awkward if at that moment our administrator is in line to buy beer. A big thanks to Carl for arranging this special moment. It gave me a good excuse to tell Raymond he needed to get the beer so I wouldn't miss this. I was so excited when Seb waved at me that the picture is not perfectly sharp but the moment was unforgetable! Carl, that must have been some cigar you promised Chase!

Wonderful photographs, Rene!
It's interesting how, on certain cars at certain angles, ignoring the damn halos, drivers are almost hidden behind bargeboards and inlets, Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber most of all. The clutter surrounding the cockpits indicates the current disregard for style. Charles Leclerc's Sauber in the wet and the frontal shot of Vettel's Ferrari are both masterful photographs! Cheers, Carl

René that is a superb selection of photographs, amazing to think that you took those from the stands, absolutely superb action images. Well done indeed and thank you for posting them for is.
The terrific atmosphere is very apparent, how on earth could it be that Germany does not have a GP confirmed for the future.

Rene,
It's great to see Sebastian Vettel honoring my request, although because you were wearing a Ferrari cap, Jos Verstappen churlishly told Max not to wave. My promise to Chase Carey, that one day someone may wipe the smirk off his face by removing his moustache, was not well-received. Cheers, Carl

Cheers, Carl Thanks Carl, the photo of Charles's Sauber in the wet is also my favourite picture. The look of these modern cars, certainly in close up is almost bizar. Fascinating (how it all works) and weird at the same time. But I agree it's not elegant or stylish. The styling is only in the detail.

The terrific atmosphere is very apparent, how on earth could it be that Germany does not have a GP confirmed for the future. Thank you JC. I did not use any professional equipment, only a 12 year old all-in-one Fuijfilm camera (with a reasonably good (tele)lens) and my iPhone. But we had good seats and you could see them coming from far so it was easy to follow a car with the camera.
It's a disgrace the German Grand Prix is not a certainty on the calender. The same goes for the French GP.

Wonderful pics René. I do hope that Seb's commitment to meeting Carl's request didn't cause him to lose concentration. ?.
