Barrichello: "They prevented me from seeing Schumacher" It says a good deal about Schumacher's condition. It's very sad indeed ...

Interesting to guess what they are thinking... Fernando: "I am happy at McLaren", "I am happy at McLaren", "I am happy at McLaren", "I am happy at McLaren", "I am happy at McLaren", "I am happy at McLaren"........ Seb: "Who's that? That new guy?".

1971 Kyalami? The guy with the briefcase looks like he is waiting patiently to be told who to pay off.

Compare and contrast this wonderful picture with current times; well there isn't any really. Just look at the bare unfinished block walls of the pit box, most public conveniences are finished better than that! Then the drivers and others seated on picnic chairs and in the corner on the "table' is a thermos flask with plastic disposable cups. Not a physio or sports trainer in sight, no air con, not even a fan. I wonder who actually enjoyed their sport more.

Also notice that Mario is wearing a different race suit than Jacky and Clay. Not very corporate. But how cool!

Also notice that Mario is wearing a different race suit than Jacky and Clay. Not very corporate. But how cool! I wonder if he's simply wearing his usual Firestone race suit because the expense of coordinated ones didn't make sense to anyone, and rightly so. The atmosphere in those days was sane and rational. Not so now! Nowadays, drivers have custom helmet redesigns, sometimes race to race!

Not so now! Nowadays, drivers have custom helmet redesigns, sometimes race to race! Agree, to me it's a symptom of too much money in the sport and wasteful expenditure. I lost all sympathy for team owners etc pleading poverty back in 1997 when Eddie Jordan boated they had carbon fibre toilet seats in the Jordan motorhome. What a waste of money, it would have been better spent on updating the aero. If one looks around the pits at all the gizmos, equipment and gadgets that the teams spend money on and that add no value to the car but are just there for one upmanship then it is no wonder the teams fight a cost cap. The hedonistic days of the 80s and the culture of showing how rich you are to everyone are no longer appreciated by most people struggling to make ends meet. The cuurent F1 mob fails to recognise this.

Rob, as a young person I moved in the periphery of people with serious money and they don't have a clue what it is like to not have money, 'let them eat cake' may be a saying never uttered but these hedonistic people are so divorced from reality they wouldn't even think of people who are starving - and that is why so many of them are loyal to BCE, he made them wealthy beyond their dreams,
