Oh my! Great to see this thread has really taken off and so many great pictures already. Fantastic. Here is another beautiful photo. My countryman Jan Lammers in the Shadow DN9 with that most iconic livery at the US Grand Prix West 1979.

René,
The Samson Shag sponsored Shadow of Jan Lammers must to the very day be the most elaborate and artistic decoration of a Formula One car. We I know have discussed this car before on the MS forum in its more civilised days, I would very much like one in my model collection as it is so stunning.

A stunning car indeed, I’ll have to do some research on this one.
Jan Lammers looking a little like Leo Sayer in the car there.....😁

Jamie, Leo was a huge F1 fan back in the 1980's; saw him at GP's many a time back then!

JC Yes I remember our little chat about this car. It is truly a unique livery, also because the other Shadow (Elio's) did not have this painting. Wouldn't even be possible nowadays where liveries must be identical in one team. But airbrushing two cars like this would propably have been too much work anyway!

Jan surely had the talent to become a topline F1 driver but unfortunately didn't make it. Jan was supported by a small group of people who had the enthusiasm but were inexperienced in the big commercial world that was called Formula One. Lack of budget and money conflicts with Nichols didn't help and Jan himself was just a timid little boy who only knew how to drive fast. Fortunately Lammers made a name for himself in Group C racing and developed as a wonderful driver and person. A very likeable chap.

Oh yes, he was a fantastic driver and one I admire very much. He was an ace in those Group C XJR’s in particular.
As you say, it never really came together in F1 for him but what a career he’s had.

Yes me too! I actually would like it on my slot car track next to my other 1979 cars but I am afraid I will have to make it myself then. It has never been done by any of the manufacturers.

Back to the fifties. French Grand Prix 1958, three pristine Ferrari Dino 246 cars waiting for action in the Reims paddock.

Fantastic picture Jamie. Is that a 1975 312T in the background? I am sure it is. Beautiful car.

A stunning and remarkably beautiful livery. I nonetheless always thought it would be more impressive (and judging by his expression, Jan Lammers perhaps was thinking the same) had the lion been baring its teeth! Imagine the threat that would present in other drivers' mirrors...

I think the Samson sponsorship was unique to jan's car René, Elio had other and less well developed sponsorship on his car, very different from today as you quite rightly mention.
It is quite remarkable to me that no one has really produced a model/kit of this car, very like the situation Rob and I discussed regarding the March 721G. Luca Tameo has a very detailed 1/43rd white metal kit of the Samson Shag car and I am still tempted to get one. The draw back being I don't think I am up tp building it as I used to due to my problem with close quarter vision these days.
