Did you make it to the John Watson talk a couple of weekends back? I looked it up after you mentioned it on the MS forum but unfortunately all tickets were gone. A pity as it was held about 2 miles from my house! On the mailing list for info on the next one 👍 It was cancelled on the Tuesday before (Saturday the 4th meeting) due to John taken to hospital in Oxfordshire for urgent operation, we were told via email. He then sent a message, he is fine now I understand. They hope to reschedule next year, I really hope so. He's a favourite, the meeting was fully booked in few hours.
There are three meetings per year - January, May and October usually - held at the Village Hall in Albury, beautiful little village in Herts, which I am sure you know well.
Ah, that’s a shame, I hope John is recovering well. I know the village hall in Albury very well, I’ve been to a good few parties there. In fact, dependant on your route, you probably practically passed by my front door to get there. I hope to get a ticket for any future meetings, it would be great to meet you there 👍 it’s a small world eh?

Yes, would be great to meet indeed. Coming via the M25, I get there from the A10, then on the A210 at Standon and turn left at Little Hadham.
I remember I went there once, almost five years ago, when there was quite a bit of snow on the morning - I think it was the meeting with Tony Southgate, IIRC - but went anyway.
EDIT: when I get the email for the next, I'll forward it to you.

As you take the A120 through Standon I live about 100 yards along the old High Street thats on your right after you cross over the river bridge. Tony Southgate - that must have been really interesting. Just been reading about his handy work in one of those Haynes manuals RE: the XJR 9.......turned up today, £10 from eBay.....a bargain.

Hi Chrsib I recently finished Tony Southgate's autobiography and really enjoyed it. A talented man who I don't think built an ugly car.

Jamie, Lucio have you read Tony's autobiography? a very interesting and extremely talented individual who was involved in many a great project, I was aware he had a book out, I think he mentioned it on the MS podcast ages ago, but I must admit I’ve never read it. Thanks for reminding me, I must seek that out. Southgate is one of the leading designers for sure and I’m an admirer of his work.

Great guy, with lots of great recollections. A great designer, one of my all-time favourites.

Trying to catch up with everything.......
Firstly to Carl and his brilliant use of Will Shakespeare, absolutely priceless. Some of my greatest experiences as a youth in education were trips to see the plays of his we were studying for examinations at the RSC in Stratford Upon Avon. I even saw a very young Judy Dench in "A Winters Tale" among many other great actors of the time. Somehow I cannot see this ever being seen on the MS forum, far too high brow .
With regard to Tony Southgate a number of us here had a good discussion on him and his book on the MS forum sometime back; fantastic designer of some beautiful race cars and his Podcast was one of the best I have listened to. I must get the book!

Chaps, has anyone read Nigel Roebuck's 5th Column in the online Autosport? it is about Massa and is Nigel's writing at his best, evocative and emotional, I do miss him, but also makes the point that whilst Lewis was magnificent the car seemed to sweep past everyone - in other words we saw the Merc at its potential but his comments about Felipe were spot on, really lovey tribute

After reading it I also thought I should mention it here. I was always a Massa fan so I really liked this tribute.

Massa proved himeself a very dignified gent on more than one occasion and drove magnificently when in his pomp (08), maybe not one of the very leading group of Grand Prix drivers but he’s right up there just behind the true greats. I think of him as a modern day Rodriguez, capable of stunning performances, unbeatable on his day but never quite reached the very, very top. Most of all, he’s a real gentleman, something increasingly rare in all walks of life. Hats off to the man.

when it worked for Massa my word it worked and I do think of his smoothness and neatness - places like Brazil and Turkey - I felt he was the better driver than his team mates, but other times he seemed to have this rather petulant attitude towards other drivers and his tangles with Hamilton were 'amusing'
but for me the sheer dignity and class of the guy - especially in defeat and I agree with Nigel R - sorry Lewis but Massa was the more worthy champion in 08 and I do not think the records will reflect this gentleman's sheer class and speed, all respect Felipe and enjoy your retirement

RTL GP: Robert Kubica signed a two-year contract with Williams Wow Valentin, thanks for sharing this nugget. If this really happens it’ll add some much needed interest to next year. I’ve been a fan of Robert since his karting days. I got to see him race karts up close and he was something extremely special. Personally, I doubt he can get back to the highs of his earlier days but if he’s 80-90% there he’ll still be amongst the leading drivers on the grid. Let’s hope a year of Paddy Lowe has a positive effect on the 2018 Williams and he’s able to mix it in or around the front (ish)....
