On the 25th March we lost what I, and many others, believe to be the greatest popular music vocalist Scott Walker. During the 1960's Scott was a huge star, somewhat reluctantly as it turned out. His voice was one that I can never forget, and he was hugely influential to me in my teens, even down to the hairstyle.
I have often likened Scott and his career choices to that of Mike Thackwell. Neither were interested in following a path that their huge talents could have taken them, they were/are driven to pursue different elements of life. Scott Walker chose a path of experimental music, and distanced himself from the big stage that could have been his.
He was held in very high esteem in the music industry and one David Bowie was apparently shocked and honoured that on one occasion he received a birthday card from Scott, something out of the blue.
To steal something from one of the Walker Brothers greatest hits, may the sun always shine on you Scott.

Whilst I was never a great fan per se I had huge respect for his ability and his "I'll do it my way" and the blazes with you attitude, rest in peace Scott and thank you

Fast forward to 2023 .... I have so enjoyed reading all the pages regarding this thread, checking out the videos where possible, smiling at the very daring for it's time Laurel & Hardy video clip and thinking to myself that all members of this private forum must surely have been brothers in a previous life for there are so many similarities! It has made me smile ... so thank you for that! I have also learnt a lot for whilst I was aware of John's taste in music .. I was somewhat taken aback recently when putting his LP and EP collection onto a spreadsheet to find the Winifred Atwell vinyl he mentioned had actually belonged to him!! Not quite what I thought a Led Zeppelin fanatic would admit to? Keep up the good work lads.

I believe it was John himself who once suggested that...

She almost exceeds what was intended for the piano with her astonishing boogie-woogie and honky-tonk stylings.
Here's my favorite original ragtime composition, actually played by the great Scott Joplin and recorded on a piano roll for the old-fashioned player pianos, his masterpiece Maple Leaf Rag.
"If music be the food of love, play on..."

Hi Carl, some people are naturally gifted and Scott Joplin is obviously one of them. Another young lady, one of many actually .. has obviously been born with the same amazing natural talent despite many odds .. and it is magical to just watch her play. How is it that those with disabilities are nothing short of falling into the genius category?? Hope you enjoy watching this link ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWFJ39nn6Rw

The depth of emotion she puts into the song may have been meant to convince Ike Turner of her love. Here she was in the studio, controlled for the moment by two monstrous egos, singing her heart out like a caged bird.

I may have said that this is not quite my genre of music but this song is very powerful and emotional.

I may have said that this is not quite my genre of music but this song is very powerful and emotional. René, As our only accomplished musician, your views are sophisticated and well-founded. One aspect of the song that sometimes annoys is Phil Spector's "wall of sound" production, thankfully not too overdone. A curious coincidence: when "River Deep, Mountain High" was recorded in 1966, Phil Spector and Ike Turner were both well along paths to self-destruction while Tina Turner's independence was beginning to blossom. Spector was so popular during the 60s, even the Beatles sought his production techniques, which didn't turn out very well as Paul McCartney hated "The Long and Winding Road" as produced by Spector. ----------
The following is quoted from Wikipedia
"The Long and Winding Road" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1970 album Let It Be. It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. When issued as a single in May 1970, a month after the Beatles' break-up, it became the group's 20th and last number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The main recording of the song took place in January 1969 and featured a sparse musical arrangement. When preparing the tapes from these sessions for release in April 1970, producer Phil Spector added orchestral and choral overdubs. Spector's modifications angered McCartney to the point that when he made his case in the English High Court for the Beatles' disbandment, McCartney cited the treatment of the song as one of six reasons justifying the split. New versions of the song with simpler instrumentation were subsequently released by McCartney and by the Beatles.
