I came across this video interview of a British driver, Mike Wilds, who made it into F1 in the mid-70's, but whose F1 career then stalled. Most, if not all, such interviews are with the once-top drivers; so I found this one interesting. There's a second video as well, which is concerned with two special private cars of his.

Mikael, That is a very interesting interview of a true gentleman who loved motorsport. The image of Formula One would benefit if a few more world champions had the intelligence and character of Mike Wilds.
I quickly recognized Riverside as the location (at 2:35 mark) of Bruce McLaren's 1966 Firestone test. The landscape, the buildings (main office and registration beside the Day Street entrance), the steep mountains to the north, are as familiar as an old girlfriend's anatomy.
Cheers, Carl

Carl,
I agree; the life story of Mike Wilds is very interesting indeed. Yes, true love for motor racing, undoubtedly - his story fits perfectly under the header "Racing is Life"! The stories behind those two private cars are also fascinating and inspiring.
Best,
Mikael

Mikael, He certainly has excellent taste as well as two of the most iconic performance cars. Enzo Ferrari said the E-Type was the most beautiful car he'd ever seen.
Best, Carl

Fantastic Mikael, I really enjoyed that!
What a passion and an interesting life. Very few people have actually made it to Formula 1 and who can say that he has driven against drivers like FIttipaldi, Lauda or Hunt? Nice memory also how he encountered Jody Scheckter. And Jo Siffert who gave him a lift in his 911. I've never been such an E-type fan myself, but this one is beautiful and the passion for the car makes it even more beautiful.

Such a life and career is no longer possible today. Aspiring drivers are drilled and trained from childhood to be ready for the big league somewhere around their 20th birthday. Certainly much more professional and undoubtedly better, but the charm of the past is now hard to find.

Everyone needs a childhood, as I can attest, never having abandoned mine.

This is fantastic to watch. IndyCar legend Tony Kanaan got to see his all time favorite race car, the 1991 Ayrton Senna McLaren MP4/6, for the first time up close at Sonoma Raceway. … and then drive it!

He was careful and never drove 10/10ths, but I wonder what his lap times were in the MP4/6
How cool to be on the pedestrian bridge above the first turn!

A wonderful sound it makes, the fabulous Honda V12!
Thinking about watching tests of old F1 cars - has there ever been published an in-depth test of a present-generation turbo car? Actually, this season is the tenth season (!) of the modern turbo/hybrid engine; yet, as far as I understand, there's still a lot of secrecy with those engines.
It would be very interesting to see a good ex-driver compare two (or several) generations of cars - for example, a careful comparison between a 2013 car and a 2014 car of same make. As far as I recall, several drivers have stated that the present turbo cars are much easier to drive than the last generation of V-8 engine-powered cars. Due to all the electric and electronic "goods", the power comes very smoothly and even.

... but nothing more spectacular that watching Senna himself "on the limit" in that car ...
(We can be happy that we have been able to enjoy "screaming" combustion engines for so many years; and (apropos of the Lotus 56/56B) we can be happy that a gas-turbine-powered Formula One car wasn't the future, after all :-) )

Singer, actress and style icon Françoise Hardy has died at the age of 80. Not a racing figure herself but given her role in the legendary film Grand Prix, she was also a well known face to any race fan. Rest in peace Françoise.
