That is very sad news about Bernard Boyer; AutoDiva here in France will no doubt be doing a big feature on him in the not too distant future. A very clever and talented man that was to the non French aficionados somewhat under the radar, and who most certainly should not have been.

Having watched Ronnie Peterson "SuperSwede" last Saturday evening the picture of him along with Niki on the bicycle is very fitting. For me some of the highlights of the film were the comments made by Ronnie's former team mates and competitors, Niki being one of them. In the film Niki makes some wonderful comments the final one being the most poignant where he states that "it was Ronnie that taught me to drive a racing car". One of these instances was in their early days together driving for March; Niki had no money and used to get a lift to Bicester with Ronnie in his silver Mercedes.
On one of the trips Niki noted that Ronnie was braking with his left foot and enquired as to what he was doing. Ronnie said that it was a better technique and that when he drove on the road he used to practice the method so that it became second nature and more natural.

A brilliant tribute to an exceptional yet understated designer René. JYS has aways said that the Matra MS80 was the best racing car he ever drove, and that is some accolade. Built to the exacting standards of a top aerospace company of the day it was indeed an outstanding racing car.

In all honesty, I had not heard of Bernard Boyer before Lucio's post. But of course I did a little search and reading about him and the man deserves at least a small tribute by us race fans. He designed some wonderful Matra race cars, Grand Prix cars as well as the legendary Matra sport protoypes. Merci Bernard!

René, My esteemed fellow MS contributor Archie Cheunda (who left when DIGust came on stream) and I had a good discussion about Bernard Boyer after P. Fearnley offered that M. Ducarouge designed all of the Matra GP cars. I don't think Mr Fearnley liked that we politely corrected him on his mistake . A great pity Archie disappeared without trace as he would have been a great asset to our forum, he also lives in France apparently. Bernard's Matra sports prototypes were indeed fantastic cars and saw off the Ferrari's in 1973 .

Rene, I also was not familiar with Bernard Boyer, someone to remember as designer of the wonderful V-12 engine that made its passage on the race track so adamantly clear (painfully to some) with a sound more powerful than any cathedral organ, when driven by Chris Amon deserving equal respect to Johann Sebastian Bach. John Charles, It's a damn shame that some wonderful potential members dropped from sight because of MotorSport's editorial stupidity. -Carl
