Thanks for this banner image Rene.......no surprise that I love this one. The Alfa 177 was an odd looking beast but I still love it! You're welcome Jamie . It was a strange looking car, a bit fat but full of character!

The new banner is a great touch René, after all this talk of Alfa Romeo being brought back. However this is a real Alfa and not a rebadged Ferrari and gets my vote. Even more so the driver, the very underrated Bruno "Panda" Giacomelli a guy who should if the dice had fallen better would have won tons of Grand Prix. Absolutely. Always thought Giacomelli and Patrese were the quickest of the Italian lot in the late '70s, which included De Angelis, Alboreto, De Crasheris (quick, when he could keep the car on track) and so on.

The Alfa Romeo's inflated look was the brainchild of a French aerodynamicist of the SERA establishment, whose name escapes me know (too many things crammed in my head these days), the same who designed the Ligier JS5 "Teapot", hired by Chiti's Autodelta.

Lucio, I always had a high regard for Bruno Giacomelli right back from his days in British F3 where he had tough season at times with Rupert Keegan (maybe the 70's version of Stroll , but probably being a bit hard on him even if he often preferred the scenery to the track). Back to Bruno; any guy that can dominate a F2 season as competitive as 1978 has my vote for talent! With regard to the Alfa 177 one can see the similarities to the Ligier JS5 and JS11, but somewhat more bulbous. The designer was surely Gerard Ducarouge? JC

i always thought Rupert Keegan was appropriately sponsored. by Durex....
Duca will always remain one of my favourite designers his creations were beautiful - I always thought it a shame, unless we know differently, that he didn't design a Lotus road car, I'm betting it would be a work of art and efficiency

Rupe initially drove with BAF sponsorship, his fathers company British Air Ferries. Later on he would drive the Penthouse sponsored Hesketh.

I think the Alfa Romeo 177 is almost beautiful, flowing and curvaceous, only the nose is bulbous. Certain race cars and women remain beautiful despite a wide nose.

The SERA outfit were also responsible for designing the Porsche 917-20 "pink pig". So in the 70s we had rupert Keegan, a lothario of note, Penthouse sponsoring a car and another car sponsored by Shag. Epitomises the era in some way.

I made this picture of Jack'o'Mally in the Zolder paddock, 1980. How easy it was back then to be so close to the drivers and teams.

I liked Bruno, great bloke and bloody quick. Even quicker than Patrese. Not much self-confidence, unfortunately.

Interesting point about Bruno's lack of self confidence, Lucio. When he was at March F2/3 he was in an environment that was good for a driver; say what we all think about that team however they were very supportive of their star drivers over the years e.g. Ronnie; Jarier; Depailler; Stuck; Bruno: Vitorio; and Corrado Fabi etc.
Bruno probably did not have that quite so well at Alfa; not the equipment if we are honest. However there is a brilliant film on YouTube of the non championship 1980 Australian GP in which Alan Jones ran a Williams FW07 and Bruno the Alfa Romeo 180 with the rest being Aussie F5000cars. Giacomelli really took on Jones but I think his tyres deteriorated too much. In the race we also see a stunning drive by Didier Pironi in a F5000 car.

Great image of the Penthouse Hesketh 308E René, like the Samson Shag Shadow of Jan Lammers, very eye catching and hugely decorative. I built a 1.43rd kit of this car and it does look superb and for the time it was a very good quality kit.
Rob, further to your aside about the sponsorship, what about Keke's Fred Opert Formula Atlantic Chevron sponsored by Excite condoms and in glorious pink; I recall Lucio putting up a photo of that car on the MS forum some time back.
