It was indeed produced by Scalextric. The first was his 1967 Mexican GP winning car and then the Gold Leaf Tasman 49T. Of course I have all three . JC, you won't believe it but I found the Mexican GP version of Clark's Lotus 49 on the Bay today and even better, I also found the Ferrari 312 T2 of Regazzoni! I have the Lauda version (from the 1976 Hunt/Lauda set) but not Clay's car. Prices have gone through the roof for this car but I found both cars today at a reseller in Holland for a very reasonable price. I am a happy boy!!! René, That is excellent news, well done indeed. Sometimes one can pick up a good deal on eBay but not as often as one could 10 years ago or more. I do not have the Regga 312T2 myself although the Lauda/Hunt twin set is very much in my collection. JC Edit P.S. Also of course the Lotus 49/Eagle we slake twin set which is yet another version of Jim's 49 but I think it is more generic rather than race specific.

Thanks Rob! I will have a look. And Policar will do the Dave Charlton/Lucky Strike car, also very cool! Oh my, have already spent too much lately as I also bought a Gijs van Lennep Porsche 917 (blue/green hippie colours, The Glen 1970) and Dan Gurney's 1967 Mercury Cougar Trans-Am. Have to slow down a bit...

The Gunston car is that of Ian Sheckter, Paddy Driver also drove one but not modelled as yet. The Lucky Strike car should be striking (sorry)! Saw Dave Charlton drive his at Brands Hatch.
René have you bought the Policar JYS Tyrrell March 701 yet, or is that a silly question?

Silly question indeed. That is the Lucky Strike Lotus 72 that I saw at Brands; I think that Dave Charlton raced it there having just purchased it from Colin Chapman and before taking it back to South Africa. I also think it went largely unnoticed due to the fact that everyone was so enamoured by the then new JPS cars in 1972.

I stand to be corrected, operating from memory as per "Pub Rules" but I think Dave Charlton brought his Lotus in 1971. He then went over especially in 1972 and raced in the French, British and German GPs once it had been updated to 72d spec. I always thought it looked good in Lucky Strike colours. Charlton and Love had a bit of a technical war from 1970 until Love's retirement. Love had dominated SA Formula 1 with his Lotus 49/R3 until Charlton purchased a 49C. Love then mistakenly upgraded to March 701 whilst Charlton went to a 72. Love then purchased a Surtees TS9 in which he was lucky not to be decapitated in, coming to a rest with his head against the guardrail. Also by this time Love was well into his 40s and age began to count against him. Charlton's next car was a McLaren M23, also in LS colours whilst Gunston went to the 72E. Love was incensed when Gunston dropped him in favour of Scheckter and Driver. I will now go and check my Lotus 72 book and report back on the accuracy of my memory.

I have consulted the excellent book on the 72 by Michael Oliver. It is titled Lotus 72 Formula 1 Icon and if you can get hold of one at a reasonable price then do so. Hio book on the Lotus 49 is also excellent.
Anyway according to the book.
Charlton purchased chassis 72/3 (in D spec)in 1971. He first drove it at the 1971 British GP at Silverstone where he qualified 13th and retired due to engine problems in the race. Reine Wisell had raced it since Watkins Glen in 1970. The car was next shipped out to South Africa and Charlton drove it in four more International GPs in 1972. The SA GP, and French British and German GPs. He took part in the SA GP in 1973 and then sold it to Team Gunston in 1974 where it was uprated to 72E standard. I think the car is now in Japan.

An incorrect assumption on my behalf Rob; just working from memory isn't necessarily a good thing when one gets into the sixth decade .

Valentin, as it is said, motor racing is expensive but having paid over $160 for another book on Jimmy and am still humming and haring over another book on Pete Collins, I guess I will invest in yet another- in saying that I bought a collection of books in an auction and some of those have a retail value of over $300 and the lot cost me $50 [there's about a 100 books varying in price from $1 upwards- just got to sell them...

Having spoken with Rob & René off site about a few books/models the topic of the forthcoming Jim Clark book by David Tremayne came up. It is currently being offered by Amazon UK at a pre order price of £52.00 which according to them is £28.00 less than RRP, with a guarantee that if it becomes cheaper the new lower price will be matched.
As a matter of interest has anyone read Tremayne's book on Jochen Rindt?

I have read Tremayne' book on Jochen Rindt and I enjoyed it. It was a subject close to my heart and the only book I have on him so to me it was worth purchasing. It is good quality.
