Gentlemen
Some of us are looking forward to this and as the time for the unveiling of cars is drawing nearer so the time for comments, thoughts views is upon us.

Bits and pieces I have read from Turrini, the journalist from Modena who often have the inside track to Ferrari's top echelons.
Ferrari's engine - power unit, in current parlance - allegedly have reached 1000 bhp on the dynamometer.
They have also slimmed the engine down quite a bit and have tried to improve it for qualifying, as they have realized in F1 it is not possible to overtake, so they have been looking to cut down the key advantage Merc had last year, starting ahead and often locking the front row.
Wind tunnel tests quite encouraging, allegedly.
The track, as usual, will be the final judge.
As Black Jack used to say: when the flag drops, all bullshit stops.

Rob, I created a new board for the 2018 season and moved your post here. Yes, the 2018 season! Halo or no halo, I am looking forward to it anyway! Less than a month to go before the first new car presentations. The dates known so far: February 20: Renault February 22: Mercedes & Ferrari February 23: McLaren-Renault February 25: Toro Rosso-Honda & Force India-Mercedes

Thanks Rene I was hoping you would spot my technical weakness and redress things.

Thanks Rene I was hoping you would spot my technical weakness and redress things. Rob, this has nothing to do with technical weakness. Creating a new board on the homepage is something only I can do as administrator.

I’m egerly awaiting a picture of a 2018 spec Halo to see if it’s as ugly as I fear....
In general though I don’t think we’re in for a vintage season but still await it with baited breath as I do every year. I hope Ferrari are genuinely up front again and it’s a close fight for the entire season. Also looking forward to seeing how LeClerc goes and I’d like to see McLaren up there again. I’m interested to see the Sauber Alfa livery......I dearly hope it’s the correct shade of deep blood red, but I’m almost certainly going to be disappointed.
Most of all, however, I’m interested to see if Ray from Toronto really has hung up his posting boots or if it’s an empty threat......as it has been every time previously 😂......I say that with genuine affection for the man, fantastic entertainment.

Brilliant Jamie! We all know he can't really stop, it's compulsary! But his posts are certainly entertainment and I kind of developed a soft spot for him.

Considering the new 2018 Formula 2 with a halo (as a hint to how the final implementation into the F1 cars may appear) it doesn't look outrageously bad, I think ... At any rate, to look at it positively, during the infancy of the wings, some wing-ideas looked a good deal worse (than the halo). J. Rindt, Winkelmann Brabham BT23 F2, 1968 J. That's three of us with genuine affection and a soft spot for Ray in Toronto. He's somewhat fanatical and more than somewhat defensive and demanding, but I like to think only about racing, his favorite teams and drivers. If he's that way about everything, I wouldn't want him in the next seat on a train.

Four of us, I too have a soft spot for Ray, and have to say he has always been polite and mannered with me, showing me a respect I enjoyed, but I am loathed to get back involved with MS's dialogue of vitriol and keyboard heroes, so have not posted or in fact read with any great degree of enthusiasm a number of recent posts
Mikael, many thanks for reminding us of some the hideous conceptions that were tried previously, the F2 car looks positively splendid beside them, as on old smoothie i do like smooth lines and curves, and when I see these i think of the Lotus's 79 or 95 and think, what would modern F1 engineers build if they had that sort of remit that excluded the 'add-ons' and emphasises cultured shapes
Jamie, i totally echo your wonderfully put sentiments - i do look forward to a new season and just hope - in reality - against hope, for a season that captivates me, but what i do know is that my love of motorbike racing - be it MotoGP, 2 or 3., WSB or BSB will wholly captivate me - sad thing is i was always a car driver who rides bikes not the other way around and would see something like 20 car races to 1 bike race, now? completely the other way around and I find that really sad

Make that five for Ray. I have exchanged some e mails with him and he is a good guy with a wealth of knowledge. He writes some excellent comments that add to my knowledge. That MS site can turn even the most angelic poster into a demon if one doesn't take a deep breath. Communication experts say that a telephone call only allows 30% of the real message to get through as the body language and facial expressions are left up to the listener's imagination. Therefore once can imagine how little of the proper message gets through on a written communication in private let alone on a site where trolls are attacking everything you say-no wonder he got peed off. We all did. I actually asked Ray to join this site last year but he declined because he said he was so angry he would spoil it for everyone. I really don't think that the people we have on this site and the they behave plus the format that we discuss things would cause Ray to get like he did on the MS site.
I too don't think the halo looks too bad and warrant I won't notice whilst the car is on track. A slight correction Mikael-the number 4 Brabham with the broken wing is actually the BT26 1968 GP car. I think that pic was at the Canadian GP. The Winkleman F2 car looks hideous, like something made from a cereal box. I also remember with extreme distaste the X wings on the Tyrrell. In fact Uncle Ken was responsible for introducing another monstrosity on modern racing cars-the raised nose.

Thank you Rob, I ought to have been able to see that, considering that one can clearly see the V8 engine ... I have taken the opportunity to correct the mistake. Mikael

I think Ray enjoys the contentious back and forth on Motor Sport, although he has a genuine contempt for the most ignorant and acrimonious. He and I were always good friends and I was disappointed when told he'd declined the invitation to join the Round Table. Every discussion benefits when the pot is occasionally stirred or someone adds a dash of habanero.

My hope is that we'll all be watching throughout the season; my concern is we won't as Formula One continues to be less interesting than other series. The days we all remember, when F1 was the undisputed supreme series, may be irretrievable. Thank you Bernie and Max.
