Alabama Grand Prix - BirminghamAfter all the controversy and disqualifications, the racing continues, this time on the beautiful circuit of Birmingham, Alabama. And apparently Josef Newgarden was able to shake it all off because he was the fastest in the first practice, ahead of St. Pete's winner Pato O'Ward!

Penske’s cheating has not gone down well with the IndyCar community.
“Herta: Any excuse Newgarden and Penske have “is bullshit” Colton Herta is not tolerating any excuses and stated his respect level has changed for Josef Newgarden and the rest of Team Penske.”
And Pato O’Ward:

... Scott Dixon ... this man is an amazing driver and athlete.
Yes, impressive how fit the top-drivers are nowadays - really athletes.
That was not always the case; and yet it mattered only little, apparently. What likely mattered, at times when the cars were physically much more demanding to drive, was natural strength and stamina.

To say that what ordinarily would be an illegal advantage was installed during a hybrid test and left in place because of oversight strains credibility. Roger Penske, Tim Cindric and their engineers are too smart and well-organized to miss anything substantial.
While it's likely Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin understood and deliberately employed an unfair advantage, having one available is consistent with past practices at Team Penske.

About subversion of rules... Twice, Penske voted and donated money to the most ignorant occupant of the oval office, including janitorial staff.

A good result for both Rahal drivers (3rd and 7th)
I don't know why Rinus Veekay was 1.25 seconds slower than teammate Rasmussen and starts in back
Roger Penske was questioned by Alabama law enforcement for aggressively pushing to pass in the paddock

It’s a mess and very disappointing. I’m a Newgarden fan but this just doesn’t feel right.. Scott McLaughlin’s response is laughable and he doesn’t come across very bright to be honest. But I haven’t seen Tim Sindric or any of the Penske engineers on camera yet. They must have known all along as you say, and so did the drivers.

Stirling Moss defined top-level motorsport as a balance of speed, momentum, centrifugal force and judgment in an equation changing ten times each second. Technology and major corporate sponsors have altered the equation. Driving skill is still important, but the major elements of the equation now include tyres and when to change them. At Birmingham, the broadcast announcers actually had the field divided into three races, based on the number of planned pitstops. Refueling has always been an element of Indycar and saving fuel as well, but instructing drivers to go faster or slow down in anticipation of the next pitstop distorts racing. Instead of final results depending only on a driver's mastery of the equation defined by Moss, engineers at each team sitting at banks of computers monitor lap times and control tyre and pitstop strategy. What will happen in ten years, when artificial intelligence laps consistently faster than any human? The innovative rule at NASCAR's ARCA Series of mandatory 5 minute pitstops at the same time for everyone, to allow fast repairs, changing tyres, and refueling, levels the playing field and could compel Formula One and Indycar engineers to turn off their computers and enjoy the race. My heart stopped for a brief moment (at 2:39 on the video) after somebody fell or jumped from the pedestrian bridge at the approach to Turn 7. It was a mannequin named Georgina...

Just watched the highlights Carl, what a fabulous circuit, wonderful sweeping bends, somewhere I would like to try, as for the race it seemed a bit more aggressive to me, was that me? but it seemed like there were some dubious overtaking and bumper car mentality, then that moment Georgina fell, my heart stopped so gosh knows what the driver felt, bizarre - but a great race and enjoyable most of all

That was a very weird moment! I think everyone believed for a second it was a real person! ...actually, everything was strange this weekend

Santino Ferruchi was almost diabolical there, but most contact happened as drivers were desperate to pass. The best pass there was Colton Herta's awesome dive inside Scott Dixon on Lap 50, perfectly timed and clean as a whistle. Also outstanding were several passes by the courageous Rinus Veekay at wickedly fast Turn 12, where most fear to tread.
We'd all be in 7th heaven at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, which boasts the largest collection of racing motorcyles anywhere. Cheers, Carl
