Thanks Carl. It's simply too much to keep up with all the series so any help is always welcome! Yes, the prototypes are cool. The #6 Porsche 963 won a well-deserved victory with #7 sister car third and BMWs second and fourth. When AJ Foyt overindulges in combustible Tex-Mex cuisine, there sometime emerge low clouds of intestinal gas capable of affecting judgment. Sebastien Bourdais and Ricky Taylor both suffered brain fade at Turn 1 in ill-advised passing attempts, Bourdais on the first lap! Ricky Taylor more carefully timed his move and came much closer to success on the penultimate lap. The main NBC announcers, Leigh Diffey and Calvin Fish, may also have come near to Foyt, as they were giddy with excitement about everything, the breathless Diffey easily intoning, "Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport #10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06"... What happened to short designations like 289 Cobra or Lotus 49?
Edit- Apparently Sebastien was tapped offline at high speed and had little chance to brake approaching the first turn. I always cheer for him and he was out within 5 seconds, which may explain my displeasure.

Kyle Kirkwood is a surprise polesitter, but one who's already demonstrated great skill coming up through the effective ladder system of junior classes called Road to Indy.

A one off or the first sign of a successful IndyCar career? He certainly has the talent as shown in the junior classes but performing on the main stage is always a different story. Will be interesting to follow his progression this season but it is looking good.

Roger Penske has an eye for style and often fields the most beautiful cars, from the team's early days with Mark Donohue's gorgeous USRRC Lola T70 and Trans-Am Camaro (both also #6), and still does half a century later.

A dominant win for a young driver with talent and composure reminiscent of Scott Dixon at the same age! Even Romain Grosjean, desperate for his first Indycar win after being cheated in St. Petersburg, was happy for his young teammate. Not sure what happened to Josef Newgarden, who was a strong early contender and led many laps, but it may have been the team's tyre strategy that deprived him of grip at the wrong time. Poor Scott Dixon was punted into the tyre wall at Turn 8 by Patricio O'Ward's dumb move and never recovered. Rinus Veekay's team never provided the ideal set-up and he struggled all weekend. Ed Carpenter is an oval track specialist and I've posted before that his team may not have all the expertise needed to be competitive on a road course. Helio Castroneves, apparently startled by the jumping dolphin fountain at Turn 3, did something silly at Long Beach again. There were some excellent passes approaching the first turn, the best spectator spot at Long Beach and near the best restaurants. Passing into Turn 8, where Dixon was bumped into the tyres, seldom works, and everyone seemed to understand that follow the leader is best at the hairpin. All in all, an exciting race that made me wish I was there, at Turn 1, near the best restaurants.

One thought I had during the race was to wonder how Alexander Rossi feels about his move to Arrow McLaren this season.
It can't have been easy to witness his former #27 Andretti Autosport dominate for the third time in Long Beach, but this time with another driver...

But with that, a place has become available for Kyle Kirkwood, which he has used well. It was a good race. O'Ward was having a bad day and unfortunately took others down with it. Why Newgarden fell back was also a mystery to me. I actually thought he would win because he seemed very strong. Tires I guess, it's always the tires. You may be right about Ed Carpenter Racing. A good team and excellent on ovals but Rinus may need to move one day if he wants to be a regular contender.

I must admit I did struggle to recognise the old circuit it is not quite as I remembered, in saying that it was a single seat race that I thoroughly enjoyed - shame about my man Jack, one day one day...great drives by both ex-F1 drivers and does make you think about their talent was never achieved in F1

With the steep downhill at Linden Avenue (Turn 1) and equally steep climb on Pine Avenue leading to the final turn onto Ocean Boulevard, the sights and sounds were magical!
On the first lap of the maiden F1 race, Clay Regazzoni and Patrick Depailler lead James Hunt into Turn 2 (1976)
Fast practice laps in 1978 (Patrick Depailler)

Birmingham - Barber Motorsports Park
After two street races and an oval track, we finally arrive at the first road circuit of the season, the beautiful Barber Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Three different winners to date and a new super talent taking his first win in Long Beach. Can Kyle Kirkwood also shine on a road course? Marcus Ericsson leads the championship, O’Ward is second, Palou third, Newgarden in fourth and Kirkwood now in fifth place.

and then we come to a proper race track, with competitive and racy drivers with a proper overtaking system not that dreaded DRS and doesn't the circuit look magnificent a real challenge and one for your adrenalin - I see so many US circuits that I would have loved to have driven and think of Europe and how few I would be interested in nowadays
But who will win out? Romain has to be up there as does, well so many others, in fact half the grid has the potential to win, a proper series. So in answer to my own question I have no idea who will win

Is Takuma Sato slowly winding down his racing career? I can understand that he, for this season, has a contract for the oval-circuit races only.
(By the way, I would imagine that those races are the most dangerous/risky ones; but perhaps this might make them also the most lucrative ones ...?)
