Indeed Carl. They called him 'Chunky' for that reason. Not that he liked it, apparently...

Lovely photo of ACBC. Knowing his penchant for saving weight he is probably concerned if the mechanics had put too much fuel in. Rob,
Colin Chapman also had a penchant for personal weight gain and needed someone to monitor his food intake. Of course, he also had a temper and would have fired his monitors whenever hungry.
Cheers, Carl
I suffer from the same affliction Carl. If my wife or a close friend loses weight I seem to find it!!

From a documentary some years ago one member of Team Lotus was reflecting on the past and indeed talked about Chapman's temper and his penchant for blowing his top and firing people, only to then a few hours later instruct the same individual to plan some important work. The poor employee would then say "but boss you have just fired me"; Chapman would then respond with "forget about that, you are rehired"; priceless, but no way could I have worked for a guy like that!
Having said that most of the chaps at TL would have known him well, and just taken things like that with a pinch of salt.

There is a very good book on Chapman and Lotus written by Jabby Crombec that is worth reading.

funny enough I do have this book, wonderfully written by someone I always had a lot of time for, Jabby, but haven't read it for some time, I do seem to remember it sort of glossed over the more 'challenging' aspects of Chunky, but i could be wrong,

Rene,
Thanks! It's great to see the sublime Fry and Laurie take on racing. The "Jeeves and Wooster" program was masterfully written and acted, with the two characters always in perfect harmonic balance, both Jeeves' dry intelligence and Wooster's idiocy wonderfully portrayed.
Some drivers do neglect the tens of millions they get to have both incredible fun and gorgeous bimbos. Here, Hugh Laurie has basically one line, but Stephen Fry does a brilliant David Croft, anomalous because David Croft has never been brilliant.
Cheers, Carl

For some reason this skit reminds me of Mansell in 1992. I can't think why!

"By Jove" what an expression that was; pass the Gin old boy! Indeed! Jove refers to the principal Roman God, Jupiter, and Gin derives from the juniper berry.

Lance Stroll's Dream
(with apologies to Roy Orbison)
As I say a silent prayer
dismissing worry,
I fall asleep
to dreams of glory
I steer into turns, I brake and shift
as lesser drivers flat-spot and drift
My dream is glory all the time
pole and laurel wreath are mine
(apologies also to Janis Joplin)
Daddy won't you buy me a Sauber race team? My friends all drive Paganis, I must have more than them
