The corporate rebranding of racetracks only confuses. Laguna Seca will never be Weathertech Raceway or Mosport the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, and the Bommarito family remains more closely associated with organized crime in the state of Missouri than with motorsport. Money talks, with or without good reason.
I hope Saturday's race at Gateway is exciting, but a 1.25 mile short oval with 11 degree banking and 25 second lap times means passing sometimes occurs almost in slow motion by excruciating gains of momentum. The excitement of speed alone (190 mph pole record) is short-lived.

I've had enough of the corporate rebranding of racetracks. Laguna Seca will never be Weathertech Raceway to me and the Bommarito family remains more closely associated with organized crime in the state of Missouri than with motorsport. Yeah you're right Carl. Next time I will discard the commercial name and only use the original race track name.
Let's hope for a good race. Josef must be the favorite for the win, he's always so good at the short ovals. But let's see, anything can happen. But pole for Will Power is quite an achievement matching Andretti's record. And very strong qualy from Marcus Ericsson in second! He has really adapted well to the American style of racing.
Top 10 grid:
1 Will Power - Team Penske 2 Marcus Ericsson - Chip Ganassi Racing 3 Josef Newgarden - Team Penske 4 Scott McLaughlin - Team Penske 5 Alex Palou - Chip Ganassi Racing 6 Scott Dixon - Chip Ganassi Racing 7 Patricio O'Ward - Arrow McLaren SP 8 Takuma Sato - Dale Coyne Racing 9 Romain Grosjean - Andretti Autosport 10 Devlin DeFrancesco - Andretti Autosport

Carl, I am wondering why Jack Harvey isn't doing as well as I think he is capable of and if he is on a one year contract or not

He's been bouncing around lately and hopefully will settle in at Rahal Letterman.

René, I wasn't aware until today that the newest official name of Gateway, formerly Gateway International Raceway and Gateway Motorsports Park, is World Wide Technology Raceway...at Madison. Of course! The technology found in Madison, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, is famously world wide but has almost no depth. If someone had mentioned that latest name yesterday, I wouldn't have known what country it was in... There should be a new concorde agreement that racetracks have no more than 5 syllables. Cheers, Carl Race Results for Torrent of Technology Raceway

That was a great race, enjoyed it a lot and Josef Newgarden showed again he’s the master of the short oval! He’s not only fast but also clever, a well deserved win and with five wins this season I see him as the favorite for the title. Impressive race also from rookie David Malukas. We will hear a lot more from young Malukas the coming years. Carl, the changing corporate names of race tracks is annoying. I will ban them from the forum and only use the classic names from now on! I noticed by the way it said ‘St. Louis 500’ on the leaderboard which sounds better.

I completely agree about Josef Newgarden's mastery of short ovals and consistent excellence everywhere, and about the great promise of David Malukas. He and Kyle Kirkwood are both superb at an early age. I remember Newgarden's first appearance at Long Beach in 2012 because of a suspicious incident. Second fastest in qualifying, he learned a hard lesson in Turn One by challenging polesitter Dario Franchitti, who sent Josef into the tyre barrier and out of the race. Franchitti never liked anyone too close to his side and, with perfect timing, more than once sent offenders into the wall with such gentle nuance that he was never penalized. There's no proof, but my opinion is shared by several acquaintances. I'm tired of my own complaints and have proposed a temporary name change, to Racers of the Round Table at Road America during our reunion in Elkhart Lake. The Tropicana ladies are growing older and time is of the essence... Cheers, Carl

Grand Prix of Portland - Portland International Raceway
The penultimate race of the year and only three points between Will Power and teammate Josef Newgarden! Unfortunately for Josef, he will lose six places on the grid for changing to a new Chevrolet power unit. But the Portland track is relatively easy for overtaking so he should still have a good chance for the race. Newgarden is certainly on a roll and has five wins this season to one for Power.
In theory, Scott Dixon and Marcus Ericsson are also still in the game to clinch the title but they would need a little bit more luck. But anything can happen, certainly in IndyCar!.
Portland is a fantastic road course so this should be good.
FP1 top six:
1. Josef Newgarden 2. David Malukas 3. Scott McLaughlin 4. Alexander Rossi 5. Colton Herta 6. Felix Rosenqvist

Portland Starting Grid
Portland is a great road course with a less than ideal first turn almost ensuring an early yellow flag. They should bypass the tight chicane and continue on the start/finish straight to Turn 4, as they once did. Nonetheless, the circuit overall is fantastic!
It's Penske 1 2 3 on the grid, then Team Rahal's sensational young Dane, Christain Lundgaard followed by reigning champion Alex Palou (Ganassi), three from Andretti Autosport, rookie sensation David Malukas driving for Dale Coyne's small team, and Graham Rahal in tenth.
1. Scott McLaughlin 58.2349 2. Josef Newgarden 58.3129 3. Will Power 58.4254 4. Christian Lundgaard 58.4482 5. Alex Palou 58.5075 6. Pato O’Ward 58.6090 7. Colton Herta 58.3925 8. Alexander Rossi 58.3983 9. David Malukas 58.4038 10. Graham Rahal 58.4475 11. Felix Rosenqvist 58.5207 12. Rinus VeeKay 58.5356 13. Kyle Kirkwood 58.4865 14. Callum Ilott 58.1988 15. Romain Grosjean 58.5097 16. Scott Dixon 58.2628 17. Jack Harvey 58.5332 18. Marcus Ericsson 58.3064 19. Simon Pagenaud 58.6898 20. Conor Daly 58.4398 21. Helio Castroneves 58.7534 22. Takuma Sato 58.6058 23. Jimmie Johnson 59.1933 24. Delvin DeFrancesco 58.6127 25. Dalton Kellett 59.0082

The amazing Scott McLaughlin, in his second season in open-wheel racing, was untouchable and dominated from start to finish. The entire podium, with an Australian and two New Zealanders, was from beneath the Southern Cross.
Many of the others drove as though they had trouble concentrating, resulting in many bumps and bangs from drivers normally well-behaved, including Rinus Veekay and Patricio O'Ward.
