A very enjoyable race and a historic 52nd win for Scott Dixon, matching Mario Andretti on the all time Indycar winner list. Only AJ Foyt has more wins with 67 victories to his name.
But it was only Scott's first win of the season and the first for over a year! Sounds unbelievable actually. And now he's fifth in the standings on equal points with Newgarden. He could still be champion by the end of the year... you never know with Dixon.
Colton Herta was strong and fast all weekend but apparently he had a bad hair day! His balaclava was torn and his long hair moved in front of his eyes and compromised his race! Silly bad luck. But still a strong weekend for him which he needed.
Also an impressive recovery drive from defending champion Alex Palou who started 22nd and finished on p6.

I am going to attempt a few words the first 2 months! I watched a full uninterrupted stream of British SkyF1 showing the the "Peacock" transmission. It was actually very good mage the more pleasurable by the lack of advertising and the omission of rent-a-gob Leigh Diffy. Saw qualifying also and with a treacherous course and demanding conditions expected more carnage.
There was some rude passes one which illuminated Sato at the beginning, initially caused by Palou. Scott Dixon was masterful and showed that even at 42 the old master still has it, well done on equalling Mario's win tally. I thought Colton looked a bit shell shocked when interviewed after the race, no bottom lip sticking out, just shocked that he could not match Scott. He was mighty all practice though and such to the idiot keyboard jocks who claim he is over-rated or not as fast as Palou or o"Ward.
Thought Rosenqvist was superb if a little rude Rossi, but the latter probably had it coming anyway, loved Graham Rahal's words about Roseqvist he obviously rates him. Also lots of praise of you Englishman Calum Illot who looked very good and has a really good personality he is going a long way and a pity he was a Ferrari driver at the wrong time. If i were Zac Brown I would be looking at him and not Palou.

I wonder if Colton, like the biblical Samson, will lose any prowess in the barbershop He also won with short hair…

Wonderful! I tend to miss some letters that I think I have typed and sometimes hit the wrong one but better than none at all . It's great to have you back at the table, John! Named by NBC after leigh diffey, "Peacock" deigned to make the broadcast available the next day and the race was indeed very good. The streaming service itself is awkward and slow to navigate, with too much content and cuteness thrown into the mix, but very good once you've secured a broadcast. Although sometimes arrogant, I don't think Alexander Rossi deserved to be punted into the wall. I've always liked Felix Rosenqvist and hope he secures a good seat after the looming game of chairs, which apparently will be heated. Maybe with Graham Rahal and company? I don't know where leigh diffey has been and hope his replacement, Dave Burns, is permanent, but it's doubtful NBC has suddenly developed good judgment. Also an improvement is the addition of excellent Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe as second expert commentator. He and Townsend Bell work together well, whereas Paul Tracy knew what he was talking about, but never how to convey it. Cheers, Carl

Thanks Carl & René, it's nice to comment a bit once more . I thought that James Hinchcliffe & Townsend Bell were superb as were the two guys in the pit lane which made Diffey even more unmissable!! Only commented about Rossi because they insinuated in commentary something similar, nothing personal about him, something along the lines of racing with someone how they race with you.

Super nice chat/interview between Romain Grosjean and Patricio O'Ward. Pato talks about his experience in the McLaren F1 from last year.... and one from a bit longer ago!

Iowa SpeedwayThe IndyCar circus visits the Iowa Speedway this weekend, a .875-mile tri-oval with variable banking. With laps under 18 seconds, "The World's Fastest Short Track" is exceptionally demanding physically and mentally on drivers. Two races this weekend! The Hy-VeeDeals.com 250 on Saturday and the Hy-Vee Salute To Farmers 300 on the Sunday! Fast and furious!
Will Power led three Team Penske drivers in the top seven of practice Friday for the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway, the only session before qualifying and two races.

I've never really warmed to ovals unless they're quarter or half-mile dirt tracks with USAC Sprints or Midgets counter steering for half of every lap, but the long history of ovals still resonates in Indycar, although dirt ovals are no longer included and remain the domain of USAC.
Rick Mears and a few other greats liked slight oversteer above 200 mph in the turns at Indianapolis, a scary thought! The demands on the drivers in traffic on the high banks of Iowa are challenging enough without oversteer.

Great first race and a masterclass from Josef Newgarden! Strong race also from the orange cars from Pato O’Ward and Rinus VeeKay! Just so, René! Saturday's race was excellent and Josef Newgarden was masterful. Despite much cooler weather on Sunday, almost 500 miles of racing over two days was too much. There's only so much variety to appreciate on a 7/8th mile fast oval with lap times of less than 20 seconds. I may be cynical, but the promoters may have wanted a two day event because they had big stars in concert both evenings. Nonetheless, Newgarden was dominant until a strut in his right-rear suspension broke and sent him into the wall. The only driver close to his pace, Patricio O'Ward, inherited the lead and the win. Shortly after the race, Newgarden passed out and struck his head near the team motorhome and was transported to a hospital for overnight observation. Of course we all hope it wasn't a hidden injury from the accident that caused him to pass out and that Josef is fine.

Two races was probably a bit much but I actually enjoyed them both (and needed the distraction after the French GP). Josef Newgarden was again in his own league. The way he could drive all those different lines around that short track was very impressive. Some of his competitors looked like they were standing still! Patricio also showed he has a very good feel for this kind of racing and I was happy for him to win this one. But of course, it should have been Josef. The impact was very nasty so yes, let's hope Josef recovers well.

Sadly two races a weekend are just too much for me especially around a giddy little place that has a shorter lap than a motorcycle Speedway track. Car component failures are understandable when the cars have been subject to so much action as well. So only watched the Sunday race on my iPad which was fine but not compelling to be honest as i don't get excited by ovals etc.
Newgarden was very well set up ands like some drivers at certain tracks really seemed to gel with the place and that makes the big difference, hope his fall and head injury is Ok.
One thing shocked me was the performance of Jimmy Johnson he was outstanding. For the past 18 months I have been watching aghast at his performances and thinking to myself what the hell are you doing, at your age you should no better and preserve that amazing Nascar legacy, but yesterday he was a different, an.

John, You're right about Josef Newgarden at Iowa. He's always fast and usually wins.
Jimmy Johnson, who I have ridiculed as out of his element, was amazing! Something in his past oval experience may have clicked into place and allowed him to go where others fear to tread. I suppose it's impossible to be a 7 time champion in any major series without having great natural talent, which showed itself at Iowa. Sadly, any great natural talent I may have remains hidden.
