Interesting news today about Romain Grosjean joining Dale Coyne Racing for the 2021 Indycar season. He will skip the super speedways (Texas and Indianapolis) but he will do all the road courses and street circuits and probably also the short oval at Gateway to try and see what it's like. Sounds good! I am very happy for Romain that he, like Kevin has found a competitive ride in a major racing class for 2021. This makes the new Indycar season even more interesting. I actually had not expected Romain to go to Indycar. I thought Indycar was more something for Kevin and Romain would go to sports cars or FE. Just based on their personality. How wrong I was!

I watched Romain's post on YT last night and he seems very happy with the arrangement, so pleased for him as he will be fine on those road and street circuits. A wise choice by him to avoid the ovals and I liked the way he expressed why he took that decision.
It is great that he and Kevin have found good rides over in the USA where they can build their careers and taste winning once more.

I am looking forwrad to seeing Romain in Indycars, he is a fine racer and Kevin to me is a champion, it was just a shame it wasn't in F1,

Romain's first taste of Indy machinery and scenery! He looks like a happy man. Team owner Dale Coyne is a real racer, at one time the only driver in Champ Car with a stock block Chevrolet engine because the pure racing engines were beyond his budget, but his team today is very competitive.
At the film's very beginning, I enjoyed the cool glimpse of a traditional Formula One drivers' meeting from the 1960s showing Ritchie Ginther, looking somber, and an attentive Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren

Romain enjoys his new Indycar at Laguna Seca
The classical, open single-seater is gone, it seems ... From the driver's eye-view, we could just as well be in an LMP1 car (with a sun-roof, if you will). But - yes - that's how it is ...

Birmingham - Barber Motorsports Park This weekend also has the season opener for the Indycar season on the calendar at Barber Motorsports Park! It is not yet entirely clear to me who is good and who not but maybe Carl can enlighten us.
Surely the likes of Dixon, Newgarden and Rossi will be at the front again but hopefully also some surprises. And I will certainly cheer for Dutch sensation Rinus VeeKay.
And then there's Romain Grosjean and NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson who will make their debut in Indy racing this weekend.
A lot to look forward to!

I pay only scant attention until the actual racing, at which time my opinion gels, but Dixon, Newgarden and Rossi will have some formidable competition from young drivers Colton Herta, Rinus Veekay and Patricio O'Ward, as well as the established talents of Sebastien Bourdais, Romain Grosjean, and given a good car, Jack Harvey. I also expect good results for Felix Rosenqvist at Arrow McLaren but will be surprised by a podium finish this year for Jimmie Johnson.
There's an awesome amount of talent in Indycar this year, but youth must be served!

that is a good looking circuit, i was looking at the turns before the back straight and wondering what they would be like to take
I will of course be rooting for Jack, another F1 loss as far as I am concerned, but F1 loss is an Indycar gain, which is a consistent theme and wishing Romain the best, I hope I have found a source to watch it but I will see

The 'Edit of the month': "Last Edit: about an hour ago by Carl: Edited to avoid a spinning Takuma Sato." It will be good for sure. Great track and so many great drivers. Really looking forward to this.

I watched qualifying live last night and it was really good. I do like the 'shoot-out' system they use in Indycar that leaves the six fastest in the end to fight for pole. Romain Grosjean only just missed out by a fraction and will start from 7th but still an impressive performance in his debut. And man he was enjoying himself, great to see. Pato O'Ward is blindingly fast, that boy has some serious speed and guts so a well deserved pole. It was great to see the IndyCars back at work again on a wonderful track with a beautiful scenery. The Italian scenery at Imola is georgeous but Alabama also looks so nice, really beautiful.

Really beautiful and picturesque little circuit. I also watched the qualifying live last night and it was very good indeed with an interesting format. So pleased to see Romain looking so happy and enjoying himself, a pretty impressive first qualification by him as well that bodes well as the boy is very fast in the right circumstances.
O'Ward is certainly mighty fast but my goodness his laps were very much over the edge, but he has car control to spare. Surprised to see Rosenqvist looking out of sorts but he seems to have got O'Ward in his head right now which doesn't bode well.
Dixon will be strong in the race and I have a sneaking feeling that Palou will be quick, and it appears that Sebastian Bourdais qualification was a hick up as he was quick in warm earlier.
Should be good viewing.

Should be good viewing. John, Your sneaky feeling was spot on. Palou won and Bourdais recovered into 5th and closing at the end. You are entitled to an expensive cigar from your favorite tobacconist, to be given away since you never indulged.

After yesterday's close and exciting qualifying, I anticipated a great race, but sadly the greatness only lasted for 4 corners on the first lap. Josef Newgarden should know by now how to avoid dirty air, but he spun and eliminated himself and four others from contention in a mess of bent suspensions and orphaned front wings, a huge disappointment at one of the best modern road courses.
Young Spaniard Alex Palou drove to a masterful win, guided throughout by the superb Ganassi team. Polesitter Patricio O'Ward was simply amazing and in the lead until his performance edge somehow faded, as did that of second qualifier Alexander Rossi. Unspectacular but finishing well were Scott Dixon and Sebastien Bourdais.
Spectators were allowed in reduced numbers and, Alabama being a State trump won decisively, many were too close and wore no masks in a brave show of defiant stupidity.
