Here is a photo of Jim Clark driving the Vollstedt and i am certain that it is not at Riverside, also the car has a different style of "wing" on the exhausts, somewhat smaller in shape. So did Jim actually test the car before the Rex Mays 300 at Riverside, this photo would suggest that he did. Here is another photo of Jim in the car surrounded by team members and onlookers, is this Riverside? Finally we have a photo of Dan leading Jim both with very obvious aerodynamic aides on their respective cars, also interesting to see that USAC were actually ahead of F1 in adopting these devices. John, I believe Jim Clark drove the Vollstedt Indycar only over the Rex Mays 300 weekend at Riverside, during which the team tried two different rear wings. The first photo is without doubt the entrance of Turn 7 at Riverside and must have been taken during practice. Below are two photographs of the same place the following year, clearly showing the same white lines across the track and, in the background of the second, the straight between Turns 7 and 8 bypassed by USAC, which joined the back straight at Turn 7B. At one point in the film, broadcast commentator Chris Economaki refers to recent heavy rains, which always bring the high desert into bloom and explain the greenery adjacent to Clark in the first photo. I immediately recognized the garage building in the other photograph as one of two at Riverside.
In the photograph posted earlier of Jerry Grant's Eagle, I managed to overlook the presence of John Surtees' very fast Lola close behind, an intimidating sight in his mirrors not overlooked by Grant. Both Gurney and Grant had stub wings mounted either side of the nose, whereas the balance of Clark's Vollstedt must have been ideal without.
Cheers, Carl

Carl, Many thanks indeed, I had a feeling you would be able to clear up the matter. What made me suspicious about the action photo of Jim Clark in the Vollstedt was the green surroundings in the background and the fact that I was mistaken in the belief that Riverside was just Desert and sand. Also the fact that the car was not fully up to the specification it raced in e.g. smaller "aerofoil" on the exhaust and no side spoilers on the nose cone. All cleared up now which is great. Cheers John

Last evening when perusing the Spark Models web site and focusing on the future releases I was delighted to see that they are intending to produce a 1/43rd scale model of Jim Clark's 1965 Tasman Championship winning Lotus 32B Climax, the Levin GP winning car in fact. What wonderful news and this will be joined by three other Tasman Championship cars which will be Brabham BT11 cars driven by Jack Brabham; Graham Hill and Frank Gardner. The Graham Hill car being the bright orange with dark green nose band of the Scuderia Veloce team.

Very nice! You should buy them all... I don't think that I will stretch to them all, but it would be the ideal . So many other interesting forthcoming releases from this brand, and many appear to be delayed due to world wide shipping issues, but maybe a good thing .

A small addition to my Villeneuve collection; the car in which Gilles won his first Grand Prix (and current banner image) the Ferrari 312T3. Bought online from a private person for 15 euros! It's from the Hotwheels Elite edition and the packaging was still sealed so a super deal. Scale is 1/43.

Nice model and excellent deal there.
Funnily enough I won a bid on a 1/43rd Minichamps Ronnie Lotus 79 on Christmas Eve, they fetch high prices now and I got this from a guy in the Uk for the original Retail Price. Not wishing to pay import charges now I had it delivered to a friend in the UK, he is already holding a very desirable Jim Clark Lotus Cortina by Minichamps that I bought at RRT earlier in 2021.

I am currently planning a new model car project which is a bit strange as I haven't built model car kit since the mid 1990's however the urge has always been there . For as long as I have been collecting models I have always wanted to have a model of the car Jim Clark made his completion debut in. It was a Sunbeam Talbot Mk111 handed down to him by his father and in it he won many sprints and hillclimbs before progressing to a DKW owned by his friend Iain Scott-Watson. The Sunbeam Talbot was quite a quick saloon car for the time with about 90bhp and Jim drove it with some gusto. There is a tale of his father's farm shepherd accompanying Jim around the local lanes one day and Jim asked him how many sheep he could count in the fields to which the shepherd replied I can't even count the fields because of the speed you are going at. Getting a model of this car in 1/43rd scale is difficult as no manufacture makes a Mark 3 version however the other evening while scanning the eBay listings of die cast models I came across an Oxford Products model of a Sunbeam Talbot Mk11B which is almost identical to the one Jim owned/drove. So I will purchase one of these and take it apart strip the paint as none are in the colour that Jim Clark's car was painted. I am not certain as yet what the exact colour was but looking at the photos (all B&W) it appears to be a dark metallic colour which is probably the green featured on the Sunbeam Talbot register. So an interesting project, and below is a photo of Jim in the car competing in one of his early meetings.

I had a bit of a melt down last evening and bought three more 1/43rd scale models, financially expensive for one go, but hey you only live once. Firstly I had been deliberating about purchasing the Jim Clark Lotus Elite which he drove so impressively at the 1958 Boxing Day meeting at Brands Hatch. The one finished in plain white and in which the young Jim duelled with Colin Chapman in the "works" Lotus Elite; I think this is where he left his initial mark on the Lotus boss. Anyway i had to get it in the end so one Spark model on the way from a known Italian seller on eBay. Along with this and from the same source is a beautiful model of the 1971 Alfa Romeo T33/3 in which Ronnie Peterson partnered Andrea de Adamich to win the Watkins Glen 6 Hours. It is part of a special series of tribute models to Ronnie by the manufacturer True Scale Miniatures. Lastly I have also purchased a Spark model of the 1967 Formula Two Protos Cosworth FVA driven by Brian Hart. i have a soft spot for F2 cars of the 1960/70's and the Protos is such a unique car with its wooden monocoque and beautiful Frank Costin aerodynamic bodywork. There are several driver versions available but I have chosen the car driven by Brian hart as he is the one I mostly associate with this car, plus he was a darn fine driver in both F3 and F2. Of course Brian might best be known for his racing engines, probably the most well known being the turbo motors that powered the Toleman cars especially Ayrton's in 1984.

Yes, Ronnie did a season racing the Alfa Romeo T33/3 in 1971 before moving to Ferrari in 1972 to drive the equally gorgeous 312PB. I have wanted the Alfa model for some time and actually have an unbuilt 1/43rd kit version which I had every intention of building but then shortly afterwards the beginning of my disinterest in model building set in. The True Scale Miniatures model appears to be of high quality, I will see when it arrivers from Italy. P.S. I still cannot understand why Slot-It have not done this version on their excellent model of the Alfa Romeo T33/3 as it would surely be a good seller.

A Ronnie version of the Slot.it Alfa T33/3 is a no brainer, you're right. Any collector/enthusiast would buy it without a thought.

Well the F2 Protos Cosworth FVA of Brian "Nosher" Hart arrived this lunchtime and it is a little beauty and looks so much better than the photographs. Excellent service from the eBay seller in the South of France who I have used before, many times . Unfortunately the Italian seller who was supplying the white 1958 Jim Clark Lotus Elite has messaged me to say they cannot send it as the only one left in stock is broken/damaged. Never mind I have sourced another from a French supplier so disappointment averted.
