Apologies to all for the complete gibberish in my final paragraph in the previous post, all thanks to this blessed small Apple Keyboard which is doing my head at present. Maybe I should try typing slower but I try to keep up with my brain at times . I did mean to type that Teflonso like many in previous years has found out that Speedways have a habit of biting hard, but there you go........ I understood your perceptive comment entirely. I avoid text messaging on tiny keyboards, like smartphones more regression than advancement. "Smart" phones are primarily internet platforms and video game devices, with text and telephone far behind. Conversation with my brother less than 200 miles is often garbled, which never happened with land lines.
My response should have made more clear my doubts that Alonso understands any words to the wise. As it happens, his claim to have been bumped off line by a Holstein dairy cow was roundly denounced by the Indiana Dairy Producers. The spectacle presented to drivers as they exit Turn 4 has a special magic and tempts many to overreach, including another dumbbell with great natural talent, Nelson Piquet.
Carl, I cannot lay the blame on a smart phone or tablet keypad but Apples wonderful iMac keyboard which seems to be causing me more and more difficulty in typing at present. It is beautifully engineered but quite compact unlike the larger keyboards on my Windows 10 PC which is about twice the size. In fact my laptops have bigger interfaces if truth be told . Shall we put Teflonso's amazing first attempt at Indy two years ago as beginner luck, he has had a wake up call these past two years. John Charles

Marco Andretti came through beautifully to claim pole, with Scott Dixon and Takuma Sato also on the front row. Nederlander Rinus Veekay and Spaniard Alex Palou are very well placed in fourth and seventh, outstanding for first appearances.

The Indianapolis 500 this weekend guys! My countryman, 19 year old Rinus van Kalmthout, aka Rinus VeeKay will start from 4th position! A very impressive result after a rocky start to his rookie season. He has the talent and the speed for a good result coming sunday. And what about pole sitter Marco Andretti? Marco never had the talent of his dad and grandpa but this was very good. It would be something if of all he wins and break the 'Andretti jynx' at Indy! Really looking forward to the race! Go VeeKay!

come to him. At Indianapolis, drivers need to listen to their spotter and be aware of those behind. He can win the 500.
I think Marco Andretti has the talent, but for some reason not the motivation of Mario and Michael. Told you'll drive race cars by an autocratic grandpa is not the same as deciding for yourself. Pole position is fantastic and a win would be great for the very likeable Marco.

Carl, I was always of the impression that Marco was good but not in the same league as his father and grandfather. But good of you to point out it is not so much a lack of talent but has more to do with motivation. Something which was of course never a problem for Mario and Michael as they both lived and breathed racing. If the expectations to successfully continue the family name in Indycar becomes too much of a pressure and therefore a burden, I can imagine this can hamper your progression. Wouldn't it be something if he wins on sunday? Or wouldn't it be something if VeeKay wins on sunday? Rinus made the choice to persue a career in America and try to follow in the footsteps of his racing hero Arie Luyendyk who is his mentor now. Arie will be present sunday and so will his parents. 19 years old. My god, I cannot imagine myself at 19 to be in a position he is now. But I guess you grow up in this scene and get used to it. If he wins he will be an instant legend like Arie. And an instant millionaire!

When actually is the Indy 500 being run European time?
I see that practice is taking place on Sunday evening according to one TV listing, is this correct?
P.S. By practice I don't mean qualifying as I know that has happened already.

The live broadcast starts here on the west coast at 11:30 Pacific Daylight Time, the official announced start time. The half-hour preceding the start is often interesting if there are last minute developments. If the European broadcast will be live rather than tape-delayed, I would tune in at 19:30 to ensure seeing the start. www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/event-info/schedule?day=sunday-august-23-indianapolis-500

The website you linked says the green flag is at 2.30 PM. Indianapolis is minus 6 hours to Central European time so the start is at 9.30 (20.30) in the evening here in Europe. But I will certainly tune in earlier to get in the mood!

Rene, You should tune in at 7:30 (19.30) as I advised! Indianapolis, in the Eastern Time Zone, is also currently in Daylight Savings Time, which sets clocks ahead one hour to conserve evening daylight.
This means it is 5 hours behind European Central Time, so 14.30 in Indianapolis is 19.30 in Central European Time.
