I think it is a feeler being put out by Chase and the boys. It will be behind closed doors though. F1 put out a statement yesterday saying they are hoping to get things kicking off in Austria on July 5. The race will be behind closed doors. I see Austria are starting to lift restrictions this week so it is plausible. The one good thing about closed door races is that you shouldn't get all those privileged artists, posers etc on the grid walk and MB may finally be able to get some sense out of the interviewees rather than the pathetic attempts at sounding clever by the likes of Mathew Mchonnacghy (sic) and Owen Wilson.

Not sure how that is going to work if social distancing rules still apply, or will all personnel be wearing face masks and have been tested for Covid19. It appears that Germany has seen a sudden increase in cases after easing some of its "lock down" so it all could be very premature.
I have read that it appears Liberty will be bailing out some of the teams in these difficult times, as it has been forecast that quite a few could well go under. The whole motorsport model is showing some very large cracks in its sustainability, particularly those teams that have no other outlet other than just pure racing.
It also appears that Chubby Brown of McLaren has been scathing in his attack on Ferrari over the cost controls as it has been perceived that Maranello have threatened to quit F1 if the limits are set too low for them.
To my way of thinking this pandemic has exposed all big sports for what they really are, just one big commercial enterprise, sport is just a secondary importance.

Rob I have long disliked the intrusion of the so called celebrity in motor sport, and the treating them as some kind of royalty. Wilson's so called interview a while back was truly vulgar in his abject display of ignorance. Why the blazes does Brundle waste his and everyone else time in talking to these over paid cretins who are just being given a privilege they do not deserve.

I read there would be around 2000 people needed at the race track to properly run a race. These are, besides the drivers, team management, mechanics and engineers, race officials and marshalls, medical personal and catering. And of course cameramen and tv technicians. No journalists would be allowed inside. All people would need to be tested negative for Covid-19.
I have no idea if this could work but not running at all could be disastrous for some smaller teams. And not only in F1. F2 and F3 teams are struggling as well as they often race as supporting act to F1.
As for the budget cap, it's a difficult one. I actually agree with Brown that F1 should really cut down on its spending habit. A budget cap seems the only way to do that. My fav team is obviously not in favour but I believe they need to give in this time for the good of the sport. I do believe F1 needs Ferrari but Ferrari also needs F1. And when there are only three or four teams left there is no F1.

I believe a cost cap is necessary if you want F1 to survive with more than three teams. Sport is a microcosm of life albeit speeded up and F1 just reflects how wasteful and spendthrift people in general have become. The purpose of having money in F1 should be to improve your main weapon ie the car within the boundaries imposed by the rules. It should not be to see who has the biggest motorhome, with the most guests and the fanciest gyms and entertainment centres. If teams and F1 are really serious about cutting costs then all the extraneous items should be banned. After all they add nothing to the racing, are only for the very few who can afford them anyway and do nothing to make the sport more interesting. As an accountant and former business manager I can see many ways to cut costs just from looking at what appears on TV. Heaven forbid if they actually put a working team together like the downforce group. Just for a start reduce the motorhome sizes, the drivers are mollycoddled enough they don't need special rooms where there is white noise so they can relax and listen to something that passes as music or play TV games. Nor do they need masseurs etc in case twist a finger nail while changing gear. Tyre warmers and the attendant expense, fancy wheel guns and pit booms and signalling lights, the number of pit crews per car, silly front wings that disintegrate at the merest touch. Gigabytes of data passing between the car, the pits and home base and acres of pits filled with gnomes watching for rain and the slightest blip in the car. None of these add to racing but they add to salaries, travel and hotel expenses. F1 costs are like an onion, peel away one layer and others will follow. If the teams don't want to do this then F1 should just legislate against these things. Now is the time to do it when everybody's future is on the line.

It's not often, I believe, that one comes across a technical drawing of a contemporary F1 car, but I came across the "split drawing" shown below of the 2015 Mercedes. It gives a good indication of how all the lengthwise space is utilized.
It's interesting also to compare this car with perhaps one of the shortest in F1 history, the 1961 "Sharknose" Ferrari.

Stefano Domenicali has said exactly the same and even stronger:
"I think that it would be criminal not to take this opportunity to revisit the points we know we need to improve."
"I see this as an opportunity for the motorsport industry to reshape."
I think Domenicali was one of the best team managers Ferrari ever had. They should re-hire him and make Binotto the technical chief again.

Great drawings Mikael. I always loved these and I had several on my bedroom wall when I was a kid. I remember a great drawing from a BMW M1 I had. Lost it somewhere along the way alas.

Domenicali is a great guy and would make an ideal team manger at Ferrari, he should never have been kicked out in the first place. However I doubt that he would wish to return as he has a very good position right now.
Made a brilliant appearance with one of the UK providers last year, can't recall whether it was C4 or S*Y, such a personable chap as well as knowledgeable.

No word on who will replace him. I guess it was inevitable but I am still sad to see him leave the Scuderia. I always liked Seb and his genuine passion for Ferrari. Wish he had won a title with them. But the writing was on the wall from the 2019 Bahrein Grand Prix onwards and Seb knew it...

It may be cruel to say that Vettel is hoist by his own petard. A phenomenal talent but not a good teammate.
Charles Leclerc will soon be the best in Formula One, a certain future world champion with the rare ability to absorb the "lessons" of more established drivers and turn them against his would be instructors.

Good post Carl and I agree with that last paragraph completely, he is the future without any doubt. I predicted that he would be WC last year and with better team organisation at Ferrari that would have been the case. Just imagine if he had been driving a Ferrari run by a team headed by Todt & Brawn with the brilliance of Rory Byrne .
