Like other creative sorts, Smokey Yunick had a restless mind and it led him to install a sizeable wing on his entry during practice for the 1962 Indy 500. The resulting downforce enabled driver Jim Rathman to be much faster through the turns, but the increased drag on the long straights at Indy meant an overall increase of lap times, so the idea was shelved.
Excellent Carl. Smokey must have taken his inspiration from Michael May. It's entirely possible that he did. Enquiring minds are curious at all times and a great idea seldom disappears forever. From Herr May to Smokey's best damn garage in town, and from there to Jim Hall in Midland, Texas, by way of General Motors engineering! I wish, as a child, I had patented the concept when it first occurred to me on a roller coaster.

It will be a long wait before racing resumes. The Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grand Prix have been postponed.
I think the season needs at least 8 races to be an official World Championship. They can never squeeze all the 22 races in the second half of the year and who knows, maybe they will skip this year and start racing again in Australia 2021.
The new regs have been delayed until 2022 is now confirmed so they can actually race this years cars in 2021.

Rene, from what I have read Monaco is cancelled but Zandvoort and Spain have been postponed, not sure at the end of the day the wording will make any difference but one GP I was really looking forward was the Dutch,
the news from Italy worsens as their deaths from this wretched virus now exceeds China, which of course will have a direct impact and tragic consequence for the Italian racing teams, including Ducati and Aprilla, let alone Ferrari
there are some optimistic comments coming through though about breakthroughs so we live in realistic optimism

After much thought I found a silver lining for race fans whose most practical choice is to watch ESPN and NBC Sports Network: while there is no racing, there is also no David Croft and Leigh Diffey.

Carl, we cannot get away from Croft as he commentated on the Super Touring Car race from Adelaide. I bet the Aussies were delighted with that .

apparently there was a 'virtual' GP at Bahrain, oh goody- did anyone else try to watch it? For my sins I watched a little bit on YouTube "live", it was dire. I would liken it to watching someone else play cards! They even had a panel of experts commenting on the various stages and most of them had been given a charisma bypass.

The problem with animation that aspires to reality with computer enhancement is it's not real. Close, but no cigar. My cousin has been enjoying "Formula One: Drive to Survive" on Netflix, apparently a well-edited repeat of the 2018 and 2019 seasons with in-depth interviews and commentary by the personable and capable Will Buxton.

I watched the Bahrain virtual GP and can't describe it better than Charles did. I also watched season 1 of Drive to survive which I really enjoyed. I watched the first episode of Season 2 but it didn't grab my interest that much so swapped to watching re runs of Foyle which were superb.
I will give it drive to survive another go but not really in the mood at the moment.

Helmut Marko has now officially qualified for admission to a mental institution! Last week he already made some questionable remarks about the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix and how F1 missed a chance to give the world the right signal by continuing with the race but now he has gone even a step further: "Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko wanted to organise a 'Corona Camp' for his team's Formula 1 drivers so they would deliberately get infected with COVID-19."
"The idea was to organise a camp where we could bridge this - mentally and physically - somewhat dead time.
"And that would be the ideal time for the infection to come.
"These are all strong young men in really good health.
"That way they would be prepared whenever the action starts, and you can be ready for what will probably be a very tough championship once it starts."Luckely his proposal did not go down well with other factions at Red Bull and has been abandoned... After years of abusive consumption of high energy attention deficit drink, Doctor Marko takes a cue from Doctor Mengele.

For someone with the prefix of Dr in front of his name Old Citron Chops is a remarkably stupid man. It doesn't matter how fit or youthful a person is a virus such as Covid 19 does not discriminate, just ask the doctors who have succumbed world wide.
The fool should be locked up for such crass and ignorant projections.

Just for fun. It's mainly in French but that just adds to the atmosphere.
