Order of driver ability is a fun one. This is judging by 2019 form:
Hamilton Leclerc Verstappen Ricciardo Vettel Sainz Norris Russell Albon Bottas
Bottom ten for later...

In a round about way I would put this forward regarding the above. Interesting to note that the highly rated Mercedes Benz Junior (or whatever they call it these days) driver Esteban Ocon was allowed to move to Renault for 2020. I understand that it is not on a loan out basis, so therefore he has been discarded by the MB management. With that being understood there can only be two reasons why MB were prepared to dispense with Ocon's services:- (1) He could have been deemed to be too feisty as a "team mate" to the all conquering Lewis Hamilton which would have disrupted the teams equilibrium. Or (2) Having seen all of the telemetry from what Esteban has done on the simulator they do not see him as the future, my guess being that George Russell has shown to be far more impressive and he is the future. In all probability the thoughts in (2) cancel out those in (1) as any organisation would be foolhardy to rid themselves of a talented driver on the grounds of team stability, especially as Ocon would have far more years ahead of him than Hamilton. So therefore MB must feel that Bottas is better than Ocon, or is he more compliant . Just as a throwaway in closing I think that Bill may have Ricciardo a little too high up the order. He hasn't really blown The Hulk away this year if one really looks closely at what has gone on this season, more often that not benefiting from updates that were not effectively placed on the second car (a failing that Renault carried over from last season re; Hulk and Sainz Jnr). Sainz has been absolutely superb this year, I've always rated the lad (as does Mark Hughes); probably very little between him and Verstappen, Max probably a tad faster but more prone to mistakes and hot headedness.

Yeah, I'd agree Ricciardo is too high up that list.
Interesting thoughts about Ocon/Bottas. Interesting to see how Esteban will perform against Danny but I do think team stability also played a part in Mercedes's choice to retain Bottas. Valtteri is good but you need to be exceptional to beat Lewis, which he is not. But he's good enough to pick up the pieces and even beat Hamilton on his day (Hamilton's off-day).

Curiously, the Formula One establishment seems to believe that the Civil War secession of Texas from the United States has been reestablished, although I doubt Texans will be happy as part of the Emirates. Also curious is the uncurious David Croft's constant referral to take-ohs and take-oh tummy. No such thing... If Sky TV personnel are striving to reflect the dementia of Rupert Murdoch, with the single exception of Martin Brundle's stubborn intelligence, they're doing very well. Shocking, shocking, shocking commentary and coverage from Sky. Bar Brundle, who is only now starting to let Crofty and Ted's utter idiocy infiltrate his consciousness. Time for a change!!!!!!! Hill is good. Herbert is barely sentient - never says anything of any interest. The short host is ok, don't know his name. The woman in the pits is passable. Whatsisname the Scot is passable Davidson is passable. Chandhok is passable. So... Sack Crofty, sack Ted, sack Herbert, sack Davidson, sack the Scot with the Italian-sounding name (what is his name, Di Resta! Sack him) let Brundle do the call with Hill or Chandock in support in the commentary box and the woman does the pit lane. Pretty much nailed it there Bill . I was a big fan of Herbert as a driver, before and after injury. However as a pundit he is total crap and often comes across as none too bright which is a real shame, I suppose trying o be the Max Miller of the F1 paddock fits the bill. Di Resta is truly appalling and how he got the gig is something i cannot get my head around, wooden doesn't come into it, for Chr*sts sake i would rather have Jordan. Damon Hill has always been good, but sadly lacks the sparkle and wickedness of his dear old dad but he was an exception. Unfortunately i disagree about the woman in the pits if you are referring to Natalie Pinkham, she is bl**dy awful; the lady who stands in for her on occasions is better but none too sharp. Lee McKenzie is the one and this will bring a smile to Chris' face, or more . I know you are not interested in motorcycles but you should listen to the BSB Eurosport team in action they show how it should be done, and with alacrity.

I'll seek out BSB on Eurosport just for that reason - if you are as deeply upset as I around woeful commentary no doubt you know what good commentary is! Those Sky ***** (won't even put any letters amongs those asterixes to give a clue!) have amazing lives and feel no sense of threat. If there was some way of mounting a campaign to get the ***** sacked, as Richard Porter did against James Allen with 'Stop the Cock' we might see wholesale changes. I HATE the way Ted and Crofty chat to each other, argh, I could go on and on. They are miserably going about hammering nails into the coffin of my enjoyment of that sport and I have no alternative but to watch them do it. *****!

...and yes I was somewhat wrong about Pinkham, it was just that sometimes she gets quite good responses from the drivers is all.

Doesn't Kim Jong Un blow away his rival generals with an anti-aircraft cannon in front of his other generals? Ted, Crofty, Di Resta, Davidson, Herbert, Pinkham, short-**** Cocky Host, meet my friend Mr Anti-aircraft Cannon! BANG!!!
Step forward Brundle, Hill and Chandhock. Now you DO UNDERSTAND. what will happen to you if you start getting too familiar with each other, try to crack unfunny jokes and forget you have a SINGLE PERSON as your audience, don't you? You're NOT on stage talking to a crowd, you're talking to ME.
Off you go. Watch BSB on Eurosport for a clue. Do your best. Impart information. Show genuine knowledge and passion. Don't talk too much. Talk to one person. Be good commentators. Or you will feel the lash of Mr Anti-aircraft Cannon. *****

Point taken men about Dan. Maybe swap him with Sainz in that list. Also, a very cool post about Ocon, Charles. Thanks for writing it and I agree. Or... is it possible that Mercedes has already signed some kind of agreement with Jos? That would certainly initiate the expulsion of Ocon forthwith, even if as only a show of intent.

Steely and unflappably Scandinavian in defence and attack, but never, ever unfair. Knows he has to perform out of his skin to match let alone beat his illustrious team-mate. Loves winning when he manages it. Loves being in a winning car. Polite, communicative, likeable. He is a super person and a credit to his parents!

Another thing about Lewis... methinks he is probably the fittest driver in F1 history and is probably therefore best placed of anyone in history to outpace his own age. I think we'll see him at the same pace until 40.

Steady on there Bill , you will give yourself a coronary with all that anger . Well placed though, and we on here have been hammering on with the same argument the S*YF1 presentation is bl**dy terrible; when Brundle is good he is very good but that flaming "grid walk" is now so passé it defies belief. If you check out the motorcycle section on our site and then go to BSB for will come across some excellent YouTube uploads of the Eurosport presentation, if that doesn't inspire you in these underwhelming times nowt will, see the excellent James Whitham grid walk to see how that should be done, the guy is a legend and twice beaten leukaemia, the second time earlier this year. Re: Valterri Bottas, I quite agree a simply lovely guy and deserves to be in F1 even if he is the ideal Number Two. Not certain whether Hamilton is as fit as you suggest, bet he comes no where near Michael's level in that respect . Sainz Jnr is a real star and his partnership with young Lando Norris is exceptional, the latter has impressed me so much this season, before I really thought the young man was overrated, not now.

I've read bits and pieces over the years about Hamilton's training - he is right 'into it', talks about muscle 'efficiency' and things like that. He is super-fit as I understand it, especially with recently revised driver weight rules freeing things up a bit. Anyway, will be interesting to see how he declines in the coming years. No doubt he is right at the top of his form now!

In fact the perfect Number two driver, and that is how teams win world championships especially when they are in close competition with other manufacturers. The more important championship should honor driving and I intensely dislike that manufacturers have been allowed to turn that around. Since the earliest races, manufacturers were and remain crucially important to the sport, but it's become a corporate competition as an essential balance was discarded during ecclestone and mosley's corruption of the sport More drivers should be in with a chance, however remote, an ideal subverted by computer algorithms and basic car designs used to enhance the advantages already possessed by number one drivers. Sebastian Vettel's four consecutive championships at Red Bull were achieved by his great driving skill in combination with car designs tailored to his driving style... and hollow best wishes for teammates. How many promising drivers have lost heart when effectively excluded from success on that basis? Does anyone believe Mercedes AMG is more evenhanded? Clearly, Valtteri Bottas will never have Lewis Hamilton's natural talent, but Mercedes should provide him with a car that enhances his style instead of the further handicap of adjusting to his teammate's. After his number two was ordered to surrender the lead at Sochi last year, Toto Wolff proclaimed, "We are all racers" when the truth, with Niki Lauda hospitalized, was there were no longer any racers at Mercedes. While manufacturer involvement is crucial to the sport, balance has been lost. The sport needs more emphasis on driving and Helmut Marko and Toto Wolff should be encouraged to shove their corporate machinations far up their exhaust pipes.
