Mercedes will race with a special livery this weekend to celebrate their 200th start as a factory team and 125 years in the sport (since the Paris-Rouen Grand Prix in 1894). A perfect occasion to have a nice start crash between the two silver arrows! Paris-Rouen 1894
But seriously, they’ll probably win on home soil so let’s hope for another good battle between Ferrari and Red Bull. I sincerely hope Sebastian Vettel has a good result to take away some pressure and gain confidence again. Nice amateur footage of the 1977 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

Nice amateur video!
The faces of the children in the photograph are fascinating, the two little ones behind the car either giggling or gasping for clean air and the two boys on the right incredulous at how silly and pompous the very short man in the very tall hat looks.

Is there a chance of a heatwave in Germany this weekend? Still following my heart and going for Vettel retribution for last year's mistake. Both Mercedes to retire early so that the drivers can spend time with the Mercedes hierarchy giving them a running commentary on the race.

A first lap collision of Mercedes at the hairpin would infuriate Toto, but the crowd may be cheering German drivers and not care.

Rob yes, it's bloody hot here at the moment and that will continue for the coming days. Not much different in Hockenheim with temps in the high 30 C. Maybe rain and thunder on sunday, like last year but that was after the race. Carl, I remember from last year the crowd was mainly cheering for Vettel. Much more than for Mercedes although there are still many Germans wearing Mercedes shirts and caps. But for sure more support for Vettel and Ferrari.

Yes, absolutely stifling heat here in Northern France today, high 30's outside and in my office this afternoon 30.9 C. In fact the bedroom is too hot for sleeping in tonight, if I had one of those hammock thingies I would be sleeping outside . Also there is flashing lightening in the skies all around but no sound of thunder which is a bit strange. So the heat looks like staying for some days and as Germany always has great heat at this time of year, it could prove MB's undoing again, we can but hope. I am therefore wishing for a Leclerc win, which is deservedly so, but that will no doubt give him the punters curse as opposed to the commentators version.

Charles I think I have dibs on the punters curse. I have backed Vettel or Leclerc in every single race this season in a competition I run with some other friends. Last race I was the proud holder of the wooden spoon.

I think people like Vettel like to confound, so he will probably win,

So rest assured on our previous form Rob neither Sebastian nor Charles will win this weekend; probably should go for Verstappen .

I’m hoping for a Ferrari win to inject some spice into this season, the last two races have been great, but it feels like the status quo still holds. In an ideal world Leclerc would win though I’d be happy for Seb to emerge victorious as the poor guy seems under siege at the moment. I’d also like to see the Red Bull’s mixing it at the front to confirm that Honda really has got a handle on these hybrid engines, I have a fondness for them as a company (Honda, not RB) so a strong performance would be great.
More strong performances from Lando, Alex and George would be most welcome as well. These 3 have been the highlight of this season for me and, in what has generally been a boorfest, I have really enjoyed their performances. Lando seems secure at McLaren now but I hope Alex is around for years to come also as he has real talent. The Marko / RB thing is always a worry though so let’s see what happens. I think George is more than doing enough to cement his place on next years grid, will that be with Williams or elsewhere?

I did read a brief article about team Willy saying it was starting to come togther and they would start improving soon, I do think it a tragedy Robert isn't as once was, but I never lose faith and hope against hope that the comeback starts this weekend.
As many predicted Ricciardo seems quicker than the Hulk but are they playing off the same level? which makes me wonder how equal are things in the other teams? say for instance does Lewis has a car advantage over Bottas, would that partially explain his dominance, however as Jamie quite aptly points out Lewis is a seriously fine driver. Taking this the other way, does Seb have the latest updates and Charles not so and yet Charles is performing more effectively, which makes for a re-think of strategy, is this the same as RB? does Max have a better car, understandably so if he does but does this help explain Gasly's earlier performances,
I can't help thinking what a massive mistake McLaren did with ditching Honda, I honestly think they would have been so much better off, one rumour I heard was that Honda were looking at Team Willy as a second team, not sure I can believe that but you never know

Honda to Williams would be great though Honda dropped Williams at the end of 1987 and they do have a long corporate memory. Whatever I am sure there will be a clause somewhere against Alonso driving a Honda powered car.

It looks good for Ferrari after FP2! Where did the Scuderia find the extra grunt on the straights, an improvement not yet shared by others with Ferrari engines? La pazienza è una virtù! The announcers said that, decades apart, both Hans Hugenholtz and Hermann Tilke contributed to the tightness of the stadium section. The very first extremely fast layout was apparently the brainchild of Hockenheim resident Ernst Christ, and races were for some years counterclockwise. When the broadcast shows a lingering aerial view, the path through the trees of the older circuit is very clear and always evokes sadness.

It is indeed looking good for Ferrari so far. But it remains to be seen if they can continue this form in the slightly cooler conditions we have now. I hope so of course!
I am afraid Pierre has signed his forced resignation yesterday when he smashed the RB in the barriers. He was already slow compared to Max and then this. I feel for him though.

Good point about Pierre, who would get the second RB seat? It would be too early for Alex so maybe Danni will get a temporary slot?
