10 years ago since Magny-Cours and 28 years ago since the last F1 Grand Prix at Paul Ricard! Quite amazing to think that the country where it all begun, the country with such an important automotive history and with many top class drivers did not have an F1 race for 10 years! And don't forget the words "Grand Prix" and "Circuit". Both very French! Anyway, Paul Ricard. I was never a fan of what the track has become with the large painted run-offs and the chicane in the middle of the Mistral straight but let's wait and see, maybe it's a good track for contemporary F1 cars. Very hard to predict which of the top 3 teams will have the upper hand. I expect Mercedes to bring an upgraded engine but both Ferrari and Red Bull will be strong for sure on the smooth French circuit. And of course an important race for Renault. Winning is not realistic but a top 6 finish would be almost like a win for them.

A high-speed straight is never the problem! The problem is the following corner and any modifications should be there. The key is to allow safe passage after an adequate braking zone. When it was clear that the one mile straight at Riverside created a dangerous situation at the abrupt following corner, Turn 9, they redesigned the approach as a dogleg to ease entry to the braking zone.
A chicane should be the last resort when all other solutions prove impossible.
Instead, it's the first and only response.

i used to like Paul Ricard, it brought some good races I seem to vaguely recollect - but, am concerned by the comment Rene, about a chicane in the middle of the straight - that seems to make it pointless,
the good news is: we are back inFrance, wonderful and away from the drag that is Magny Cours and that has to be positive?

Yes the chicane is rubbish. The 'easy' solution for a 'problem' that in most cases can be handled in much better and more elegant ways as they clearly did at Riverside. But Chris, as you said good to be back in France! Paul Ricard has the atmosphere of summer to me. I've been there once for the 1988 Grand Prix and the first thing I always remember is drinking Ricard and smoking Gitanes under the scorching sun! I can still smell it!

Chris and Rene,
I agree that even a mutated Paul Ricard is far better than Magny Cours, with its incredibly slow final zig-zag. Whoever chose that circuit had to be drunk, and not on fine liqueur. Cheers, Carl

Magny Cours was during Ecclestones time. I warrant it had nothing to do with liquor just greed.

Some interesting noise on the driver market. Ferrari is said to be ready to replace Raikkonen with Lecrerc. I think that would be a clever choice if they can't get Ricciardo.
And, also interesting, McLaren is rumoured to have offerred Ricciardo a huge sum to come to Woking. Does that mean Alonso is definitively moving to the US?

I doubt Ricciardo would even want to visit Woking!

Woking looks a very nice place to live, that part of Surrey is just the place Daniel would enjoy to stay
just not working in Woking, especially without wings -
seriously, are McLaren going to stay with Regie?
