The preliminaries were exciting, the track is outstanding, and we have reason to hope for an excellent race with three teams in with a good chance.
As I become more used to the Sky broadcast, now replacing NBC Sports in America, I have to say it's well done overall with good analysis. Martin Brundle is excellent, an impeccable authority, and most of the others are very good. With enjoyment as a goal however, it's hard to appreciate the schoolgirl giddiness of David Croft. I agree that its setting up for an exciting race, the top six cars are amazingly close on qualifying pace. And I REALLY agree with you about 'Crofty', we only get SKY coverage here, and it gets really frustrating to hear his commentary race after race. He does get quite alot wrong, provides very little insight, and was terribly Hamilton biased in the Rosberg era. The colour commentators on SKY, Brundle, DiResta, Hill, Davidson, and now Rosberg, are all excellent, and insightful. Who do you suggest as an alternative to Croft?

Jim, your whipping-boy proved you wrong... so far. Max was awesome all sessions. There is still lots of opportunity for Ver-crash-en to keep his run going, although I agree he's had a very strong weekend so far. If he's going to try to get to the front, and make use of his hypersoft tyres off the start, AND keep the counter ticking along on the driver contact clock, then Bottas had better beware as he's the only one of the top 6 that he hasn't yet hit. Failing that, there could be any number of opportunities as he tries to recover position after an early stop to replace those worn Hyper's. Come on Ver-crash-en!!! 15 races to go and only 14 more drivers to be hit, "You've got this!!!".

If RBR are starting the race on Hypersoft's, does anyone know what's the time delta for them compared to the Ferrari and Mercedes who are on Ultrasoft's? And what's the difference in the number of laps that the Hypers can run compared to Ultra's? It looks like unless RBR can get past a few cars (in Ver-crash-en's case, Bottas and Vettel), or can magically run much further on Hyper's than others, that they're not going to get any advantage from being on hyper's. And if Ver-crash-en is out to make up places in the first few laps, there is going to be contact, with a car or a wall! I don't know Jim, couldn't find the numbers anywhere. I have the feeling this is a bit of a gamble on Red Bulls side. Gambling indeed on the scenario that Max makes a very good start and then is able to control the race. Max has driven some strong races here before and the Bull was pretty good on the Hyper long run.

Oh yes, Forza Ferrari! That was a very good and important win for Seb and Ferrari and back in the championship lead again. Great interview with Paul Di Resta afterwards where Seb showed his historical awareness by mentioning how important this track is to Ferrari, how important Ferrari is to the Canadian fans and what Gilles Villeneuve means to the fans and Ferrari. Top class. Good result for Bottas but that mistake at turn 1 could have cost him second. Another strong podium for Max who is clearly moving away now from the bad season start. A mature drive. Kimi was invisible by the way. McLaren, Williams? Oh my....

Rene,
You don't mean "lions and tigers and bears?" Oh my! The race was exciting at times and in places, worth watching and very well done by Vettel and Ferrari. There remains too much overall control by engineers in the pits, but changes have been promised. Did you notice the banner held by two beautiful women in the Turn 10 grandstand reading "Hallo Rene!" Were they fans of Ferrari or friends...or both? Cheers, Carl

The race was not as exciting as qualifying promised but it was exactly how I like my Ferrari victories. I love the Canadian GP on that track. However, I think most people were driving within themselves hence the lack of wall bashing. F1 and Pirelli really have to do something about the tyres though. It seems crazy to me that the fastest way to race is to drive slowly within the limits of the tyres. I know Fangio tried to win the race at the slowest speed but now the whole field is doing it. It does appear though that some progress is being made towards more sense in that next year the tyres will be hard, soft and qualifying regardless of the actual compounds. Now all they have to do is paint the markings all the same colour, and stop the teams having to use two compounds.
I was annoyed to see a celebrity being allowed to wave the chequered flag with the resultant confusion. F1 makes a big fuss about safety but then lets someone who has no real knowledge of the sport take part in the flag waving. We all know that flags are used for safety purposes during the running of an event and the chequered flag is just as important as any. Imagine if the race was closer or some fans had run onto the track after seeing the chequered flag. I was horrified to see that the Daytona 500 was flagged off by Charlise Theron this year. Her experience with racing was at a fairground kart track. Celebrities are not like children in that they should not be seen and definitely not heard around the business end of a race track.
Finally, it appears that Brendon Hartley had to go for a head impact assessment because his head made contact with the halo during the accident. Did the FIA not see that coming?

Do we all get the same TV coverage? I was getting so frustrated with the fact the cameras would keep cutting away from the close racing (Hamilton closing on Ricciardo), or not cover it at all (Ver-crash-en closing on Bottas), so that we could see..... vista's of the lake beside the circuit, fans waving flags in the stands, Super Model and activist flag girl, Lance Stroll in the pits. A bit useless really. We missed a lot of the Ricciardo / Hamilton train tearing through the backmarkers. Ricciardo seemed to do a fantastic job to use the backmarkers to keep a gap to Hamilton. And presumably, Bottas and Ver-crash-en were doing the same, but we'll never know for sure. I'm delighted with Vettel's dominant win, Bottas ran a very solid 2nd place, and it was a great run by Ver-crash-en to third (He still keeps the nickname, and I'm sure he managed contact with Bottas in turns 1 and 2 off the start, so another notch on the belt there, and his hit a race is intact). Even more delighted with Ricciardo holding 4th under sustained pressure from Hamilton. After that, what a huge gap back to 'the best of the rest', we haven't seen that for a while. It was awful that Stroll didn't leave a gap for Hartley, taking them both out of the race. And well done Grosjean, completing a solid and error free weekend, and a good result for HAAS, on a heavy braking track. Lastly what happened to Kimi after the pitstop, he just drifted back into no man's land, in a car capable of winning the race.

Jim I think we do judging from your comments. The director did seem to spend an inordinate amount of time focussing on the non essential parts of the GP. Maybe it was a blessing that Stroll left when he did, ? I would have hated endless shots of him tooling around at the back and making petulant comments about his car. I thought that he took Hartley out. The move was on from my viewpoint.

Finally, it appears that Brendon Hartley had to go for a head impact assessment because his head made contact with the halo during the accident. Did the FIA not see that coming? Apart from a Reddit thread, I haven't seen any other sources making that claim. I think its unlikely, given how the drivers are strapped into the cars, and the HANS device, and the head rest that prevent the drivers head from coming into contact with the Halo.

I wonder what is going on with Hamilton. No doubt he will come back strong as he is, but he hasn't signed yet the new contract beyond this year, and he has these weekends of mediocrity. There is no doubt in my mind he is a better driver than Vettel and would really like to see him in a red car, to spice things up quite a bit. Unfortunately Ferrari are not imaginative anymore, they are run like an accountancy, the last time was with Fiorio when he almost signed Senna before being sacked for clashing with a mediocre president like Fusaro (no more than a Fiat middle manager).

The way he left just enough room for Valtteri after the start in turn 1 showed he learned.

Lewis seemed not 100% focussed but as you say, he'll bounce back soon with a dominant weekend I'm sure. As for Ferrari I agree but who knows, they might just replace Kimi with Charles. That would be something.
