The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a track that usually provides good and exciting races. Monaco winner Ricciardo will take a grid penalty and given the long straight this will probably not be Red Bull's best track anyway. A Ferrari/Mercedes battle seems more likely but a small rain shower can change the game overnight!

Going for Vettel. Time Ferrari won again. Nice pic and another reason why Gilles was such a hero to many.

Gilles was a racing hero and that was probably one of the most memorable third place finishes ever! Of course he was lucky not to get black flagged but how could they? This was Canada!

After Daniel Ricciardo managed so well with 160 fewer horses, he will more easily take advantage of a full brace.

Brilliant photo René; Gilles in full Verstappen mode ; only in Max's dreams! I read that the FIA have introduced a uniform standardised helmet for F1 next year; Jeez what will Todt and co interfere with next, standardised driver underwear!! God save us from this fool who obviously has nothing better to do that make legislation that takes away all interest from the god forsaken sport of F1. This gentlemen is the guy that presided over the amazing Group 5 Rally Peugeot team in the 1980's, I sometimes wonder what guys like him have for breakfast mornings, whatever it is it needs lacing with viagra, or similar.

Red Bull and Max in particular is looking strong. Okay, Ferrari and Mercedes will have something extra by tomorrow but it's looking very close.
Also looking forward to the parade lap on sunday with Jacques in Gilles's Ferrari T3. 40 years ago since Gilles won his first Grand Prix! Can't believe it's that long ago...

In an extraordinary escalation of petulance, Lance Stroll claimed he was groped while climbing out of his FW41 by the two lateral arms of his car's halo protective device. No one else on the team witnessed the incident, but others along pit lane reported a prolonged shriek.

I remember the joy I felt at GV winning his first race. It was one of those moments that you look forward to, know that it has been ordained and that the driver in question will achieve greatness. Other drivers' whose first race wins have created the same effect are Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Alonso, Vettel, Schumacher M, Peterson, Prost, Hamilton. I have only chosen drivers since 1970 as I was really following the sport "live" before that. One who I thought would fall into the above category was Montoya whose F1 career turned out to be a disappointment.

This should be an interesting race. Are Mercedes sandbagging (again) and we'll find that a 7 race old Merc p.u is just as pokey as a fresh Ferrari or upgraded Renault? Will there be significant differences between the performance of the tyres on the different tyres? I think this could be the strategic difference between the teams this weekend. Will my whipping-boy Ver-crash-en, meet the wall of champions, and who will he hit in the process? And how will the midfield shake out? I'm picking the Hulk for best of the rest, with his upgraded Renault p.u, and Hartley to finish ahead of Gasley just to give Marko some pause for thought.

One o'clock in the morning, switched on Fox Asia and they are live from Montreal! Must have all my world times upside down. Hang on a moment... they are talking about Button, Kobayashi in second place... it's a replay.

Whooaah, P1! Forza Ferrari! That was a close qualy with three teams in the top 3. Fantastic pole for Seb! Jim, your whipping-boy proved you wrong... so far. Max was awesome all sessions. But you're right about Hartley, very good job! Lecrerc superb again, also the Hulk and Ocon and of course Bottas. This is going to be a cracker I'm sure.

The preliminaries were exciting, the track is outstanding, and we have reason to hope for an excellent race with three teams in with a good chance.
As I become more used to the Sky broadcast, now replacing NBC Sports in America, I have to say it's well done overall with good analysis. Martin Brundle is excellent, an impeccable authority, and most of the others are very good. With enjoyment as a goal however, it's hard to appreciate the schoolgirl giddiness of David Croft.
Just in the few minutes leading up to qualifying, he made several blunders while talking incessantly. While a graphic about tyre strategy was displayed, he confused ultra and hyper compounds and turned Mark Hughes' conclusion on its head. Not bothering to check simple facts, he continues to describe the freshwater in the Saint Laurence River as saltwater. His breathless embroidery of the final laps of Q3 detracted from a drama needing no artificial enhancement. Leigh Diffey, retained for some reason by NBC Sports to announce IndyCar, is no better. The usual rationale for false drama on television is when an activity is inherently dull, which may be how network executives view racing. Golf, which is inherently dull, has no loud idiots in the broadcast booth. I know two motorsports announcers who could change that for the betterment of racing.

If RBR are starting the race on Hypersoft's, does anyone know what's the time delta for them compared to the Ferrari and Mercedes who are on Ultrasoft's? And what's the difference in the number of laps that the Hypers can run compared to Ultra's? It looks like unless RBR can get past a few cars (in Ver-crash-en's case, Bottas and Vettel), or can magically run much further on Hyper's than others, that they're not going to get any advantage from being on hyper's. And if Ver-crash-en is out to make up places in the first few laps, there is going to be contact, with a car or a wall!
