René,
Ban me by all means I deserve it as a "Junior Member" .
I did have to have a quick online check to see if my initial thoughts were correct however, so not quite as clear as one would think.
Those cars and drivers are just sensational and even now send a shiver down my spine just thinking about them. I have the Fly Gulf 917, Pedro's Monza car I think, but still hanker after a 512S by the same manufacturer. I do have a Spirit 512M from Kyalami but it isn't quite the same. It is Fly that got me back into slot car collecting in the late 1990's, I have bought many mint boxed on the E of Bay at lowish prices in the mid 2000 before moving to France.

Ah! Ha! René,
A true classic featuring some of the greatest, no matter what formula they were in......
You are truly amazing, John Charles. I especially enjoyed your duel of swords exclamation, more to the point (ow!) than "the game is afoot" Until the next time you offend [ ], your seniority should be restored.

We have to have a little chuckle at times .
Here is a very good shot of Jacky Ickx from the same meeting at the Glen in 1970. I really like the 512S with the roof panel removed; Ferrari always did that with some of their prototypes, some had lids some did not!
The signature was on the picture when downloaded, nice touch.

JC JC, I'll take any opportunity to talk slot cars! The Fly Classic series from the late 90's early 2000's was a 'game changer' in the slot car world and re-ignited the love for this hobby for many around the world. The most iconic models were indeed the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512S. At first sight you could hardly believe it was a slot car! I agree the 512M made by Spirit does not have the same appeal as a Fly Classic, they somehow got the proportions a bit wrong. To improve the look, I reworked one of the two Spirit Ferrari's I have (the Kyalami car). I lowered the bodywork and reduced the track width a bit so the wheels fall more inside the arches. I painted the engine/exhaust part, tape around the headlights, a few extra decals and Slot.it running gear completed the rework. Much better car now. FYI, the new manufacturer Falcon Slot have announced they will release their first 512M this year in Escuderia Montjuich/Tergal colours and more liveries next year. Could be good. www.slotcar-today.com/en/notices/2017/09/ferrari-512m-preview-falcon-slot-cars-6673.phpAs for a Fly 512S, I know a reseller on the bay who has them quite regularly for a normal price. Sometimes prices for these cars go through the roof! Also a Dutch web shop has a few for sale albeit in the 75 euro range. The lowered 512M Next to a Fly Porsche
And next to the other Spirit 512M. If you look closely, you can see the red car sits lower.

Some good work on that "works" Ferrari by Spirit René. It looks a lot better after you have weaved your magic on the model.
Spirit are not up to the standard of the Fly models but offer the opportunity to do something with them. Do you agree that the earlier 512S is a better looking car than the more "wedge like" 512M.
I understand that when Roger Penske took delivery of his 512M he was unimpressed with the build quality of the car, so the team stripped and rebuilt the whole thing, even the engine. Sounds like Penske to me.

The 512S is certainly the more elegant car but I always had a fascination for the M. Its looks are really the beginning of the 70's, not? The wedge shaped sharp lines. But they are both fantastic race cars. I made some upclose pictures at Goodwood of a 512 S that I will post. Never heard the Penske story but it does sound like him. What would Enzo have thought?

René,
Further to your comment, and Jamie's about the 512M running in the Austrian 1000Kms, this event actually features in the excellent film "1970 - A Year To Remember - John Wyer's Gulf Porsche 917 Team". There is some really superb race footage in this film including Pedro Rodriguez' astonishing performance at Brands Hatch.
John Wyer comes across as a typically "well bred" Englishman of the times and most definitely shows a clear favouritism towards Pedro over "Seppi". of course there was always talk of the fact that Pedro was a Gulf driver, and "Seppi" a factory Porsche man.
Incidentally there is footage of the first corner barging match between Siffert and Andretti that features on the current banner .

That is such a fantastic footage I can watch it over and over again! Just wow and I can see the complete Fly Classic collection coming by! And indeed a short moment for the debut of the works Ferrari 512M that outpaced the 917's as Wyer admitted. Also great to see the site banner in real movement!

JC John Charles, Wonderful film. I had never before seen more than glimpses of Pedro's astonishing victory at Brands Hatch. He will always be on my short list of great drivers of that period. Your assessment of John Wyer is just right. A strange thought occurred that he could have easily substituted for Charles Gray, so wonderful as the "well bred" narrator in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" What superb detective work on your part to "incidentally" locate film of the current banner photograph. Well done. -Carl

So pleased that you both liked and appreciated the film René and Carl. I am always reluctant to put these YouTube films up as i am certain you all will have seen them already.
It was mere coincidence Carl that the Watkins Glen 1000Ks start sequence was in this film, and i cannot lay any claim to be smart in finding it, just a wonderful surprise to me also. Seeing that drive of Pedro's at Brands Hatch was absolutely mesmerising, it must be one of the greatest drives in the history of motor racing. it was interesting hearing Wyer say that Pedro was very easy on the machinery and that he always drove with calculation; many at the time thought of him as a bit of a charger but nothing could be further from the truth.
Charles Gray now there is a name to conjure with, the archetypical "plummy" Englishman who graced many a Uk TV show in past decades, usually playing some scoundrel or other.
On he subject of Sports Car racing I have two or three more in the pipeline from the 1960's, all of excellent quality which i will put forward over the coming weeks as i do not wish to saturate you all with them.

In this weeks banner two Brazilian hero's. On the left the start of the 1974 Brazilian Grand Prix with Emerson Fittipaldi taking victory (and the championship later that year) and on the right a small tribute to Felipe Massa. Maybe not one of the great Brazilian champions but still a very good driver in his (early) Ferrari years. A second goodbye this time so "Tudo de bom, Felipe!".

Great new banner René and a fitting tribute to a lovely little guy, who in all probability should have stayed retired the first time. I say this not because I feel he hasn't done a half decent job this year but because he bailed Williams out when Bottas left for filthy lucre, and then got the typical Williams treatment.
Actually René there are three great Brazilians in that banner, the third is to the left and behind Regga's Ferrari .

I know, Carlos Pace. I actually wanted to do a banner on his '75 victory first but ended up with this one!

Rene, what a wonderful banner and a fitting tribute - to lets face it a real class act, I haven't always cared for Felipe's driving tactics but, off the circuit the guy is sheer class, and a real tribute to someone I hold in great respect
I always thought Carlos a great potential and a great loss, and someone I have never forgotten, I was less a Emmo fan until he went to Indycars and then I felt that respect for an awesome driver
