Thank you JC, I had missed this on ITV- something to do with a Paul Rodgers Free convention and a few beers, I did catch a bit on utub Sunday and as usual it looked great, so many great cars, great names, even Tiffers was there and it was brilliant to see Dario back there. I will try and 'catch up' with the catch-up - there is a certain irony about the combination of aerodynamics, the best designer for 20 years and an e-type shorn of aero enjoying themselves at Goodwood, not sure if Adrian was there this year but he has been in the past, he obviously enjoys the fruits of his labours and why shouldn't he? but... I clearly recall a concert I attended early in the Jurassic Period with Free opening for Traffic, Paul Rodgers taking extreme liberties with the microphone cord and Stevie Winwood majestic at the piano.
Dario Franchitti was one of the finest drivers Europe allowed to get away. I have a theory that he was masterful at gently punting a challenger off line at times when side by side through a corner, avoidable contact so cleverly done that it could only be judged a racing incident. Always fast, smooth and quite honest, but he'll probably never confirm my suspicion.
Hopefully expanded highlights of the Goodwood Revival will be shown on American television sometime down the road although, like John Charles, I don't enjoy the costume party of the privileged aspect. There should be children hired to push the most obnoxious into deep mud as they are being highlighted on camera.
If the rules allowed, would Adrian Newey put winglets and barge boards all over an E-Type? He'd never admit it.

excellent Carl, I am in awe that you saw both Free and Traffic, two of my favourite bands that have ever been, wonderful
I never quite understood why Europe seemed to stitch Dario and Marino to some extent up, he was as you say - smooth and very very quick, but Europe's loss was the USA's gain, his devotion to Jimmy raises him so high in my estimation the man walks on water, and he is a real favourite co-commentator
I would gladly get out the tweeds and flat cap and join the elite but sadly my connections would not permit it, but I would gleefully join in as a rocker who mocks
even if rules allowed? Adrian? mmm may have to consider that one...

I had meant to comment further on the Paul Rodgers Free Convention that you had attended Chris, which must have been really good. Paul Rodgers is one of the very best rock blues vocalists around and his voice is as strong as ever, he must be 70 years old by now at least for I am 69 tomorrow for goodness sake.
One of the best music DVD's I have is of the Paul Rodgers & Queen concerts in the mid 00's, it is absolutely amazing and was brought about by a brief appearance by Paul with Brian May prior to that and then the germs of the idea came about. Dare I say it but I preferred this to Queen with Freddy Mercury, who I also like. At the time he was living in Canada out in the wilds I understand, maybe still does.
Regarding Dario being allowed to get away from Europe I think it may have seemed back from the year he was teamed with Jan Magnussen at Paul Stewart Racing in British F3. At that time Jan was the superstar elect and was on everyones list, he had been phenomenal in Formula Ford and was mighty quick in F3. Dario couldn't quite handle him that year and eventually slipped off to America. Sadly Jan couldn't relate the undoubted ability to further his single seater career, but has had a long and illustrious career in GT. Probably more naturally gifted than his son Kevin, but lacking his application and grit in his earlier years.
Dario on the other hand went from strength to strength in America, and an all round great guy.

many happy birthday fellow Virgo, 69 and going as strong as ever I hope, it would be marvellous to buy you a celebratory beer sometime - mine was last Saturday and a beer or two were raised in surprise I am still going, sorry Paul wasn't there but three tribute bands - one of whom was brilliant and want to see him perform again, but in a very interesting part of the North-east called Wallsend, interesting....
I remember Jan wiping everything aside in his brilliance and never quite matching his earlier promise, but Dario and all late developers, it seems a tragedy to me that so many teams irrespective of sport or categories look at instant success and not at longer term- it is quite refreshing when they don't take that attitude and in Dario's case a damm shame

John Charles and Chris, Have you two ancients been wandering into our Young Fellows Club since its inception without arousing suspicion? Not to worry, because although we normally forbid those over 30, exceptions are made for the young at heart having great depths of knowledge. Don't tell the others, but I am also over 30...
Happy Birthday to you both! Cheers, Carl

Oh my, a birthday party! Happy birthday Chris and John Charles! Ontario Motor Speedway had the finest infield road course I've ever seen and it was the road course events that drew me there. I always liked the concept of Formula Atlantic and still do because it produced great racing. In the Spring of 1976, I saw Gilles Villeneuve in his #69 March simply drive away from the field the same way Jim Clark used to do. I was impressed but wasn't sure what advantage he may have had.
The next time I saw him was in 1978 at Long Beach in his #12 Ferrari and it was there I realized the Ontario result was not accidental and he had an uncommonly rare and awesome talent.

Carl, those are great memories of Gilles.
When I went to see my first Grand Prix at Zolder in 1979, I was already a Ferrari fan. Jody won that day so that could not have been better. But Gilles made the biggest and lasting impression on me. He had to pit after the first lap because of contact with Regga and subsequent front wing damage. He was dead last when he returned to the track and third when they started the last lap! No safety cars, no DRS back then. OK, quite a few DNF's but he drove brillianty and every time he passed someone the grandstands cheered and yelled. As a little boy it gave me goosebumps every lap. Unfortunately the Ferrari #12 ran out of fuel a few hundred metres before the finish but that didn't take anything away from the magic and speed he showed that day.

What a shame that Paul Rodgers wasn't there but it sounded like an excellent gig none the less. A wonderful little anecdote for you; during this amazing Queen + Paul Rodgers concert from Sheffield they do lots of Queen oldies of course and famous tunes from Free and Bad Company. When Paul comes out to do some free songs he says "Well it was All Right then and it is All Right now", priceless and the audience erupted.

Oh my, a birthday party! Happy birthday Chris and John Charles! That is a very clever use of the Gilles photo; number 69 matching my own anniversary, and Gilles himself would have celebrated his earlier in 2019 along with our own good friend from California . The Minichamps 1/43rd scale model of this famous Direct Film sponsored March 76B was an early birthday present to myself. Happy birthday old man Ha! Ha!

September is a good month . Stirling Moss celebrated his 90th birthday on the 17th, the same day as my mothers who would have been 92. The brilliant Barry Sheene would also have celebrated his 69th on the 7th, sadly no longer with us either. What was the old Earth Wind & Fire song...............

In recent years, several Goodwood Revival races would be televised each year. This compilation I found of the 2019 event is excellent, but it was fine before as well as more accessible. Progress to a broadcast network is regression anywhere else.
