Because of the recent economic downturn affecting Hollywood, many independent films are being shown on cable movie channels instead of the usual formulaic studio sequels and it's been a treat to see true excellence. Perhaps for similar reasons, classic stock car races are being shown on one sport channel. The oval races I overlook, but I really enjoyed the 1986 Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen, one I must have watched at the time. Many of the top drivers were comfortable on road courses and it was wonderful to be reminded how smooth and fast they were.
What a difference from today's hyperbolic idiocy! The late Bob Jenkins and guest commentator Rick Mears presented a calm and informative broadcast, and on a full screen with no leaderboard crowding one side. Even so, I always knew who was leading and what positions were closely contested.
All the more reason that certain announcers should be thrown from the broadcast booth.
