The days of high-screaming racing engines are gone ... High efficiency implies low sound-level, apparently.
Well, if we aren't used to it already, we'd better get used to it, I guess ...
After so many years along the track and playing bass guitar in rehearsal rooms I think it's good this way! Give my ears a little rest. But sure, it's a shame, of course, but I'm afraid you have to go to a classic event to hear another roaring V8, 10 or 12. They do say that the new generation of F1 engines (from 2026?) will make more noise again.

That sounds like a very sensible idea. Since the consensus is, apparently, that the future car will be all-electric, the future F1 engine might just as well be spectacular! If it will be super-effective (energetically) and if it can run on some "green" synthetic (non-fossil) fuel, it will also make sense in today's world.

Rene? have you mentioned this before? playing bass guitar? sorry if you have mentioned it before and please forgive an ageing memory - says he with Black sabbath currently blasting out.....ah bliss
I am guessing this is one of the reasons why historic racing is such big business these days, although I never saw the Lola T70 in its prime many years ago Oulton Park used to hold a historic meeting at the beginning of the season and when I moved to the North East I went and saw said Lola with its Chevvy engine bellowing its song out loud. that really was something.
Hopefully I can get to Race Retro next year and maybe Donington Historics and get my fix of these ageing beauties
The sad thing is it looks like there won't be any Silverstone 6 hour race next year?? these cars are just starting to get interesting again and what does Silverstone do?

Chris I have, somewhere, quite a while back I believe.
Yep, played the bass for many years. Mainly alternative music like new wave, punk and rock. I found my musical friends in the 1980s. Not that far off Black Sabbath..
Still have my bass, a Rickenbacker and a small Fender amp but haven't played for years. I used to have a big fat Ampeg amplifier but I sold it years ago. Just looking at it made the whole neighbourhood shake!

Exactly right, Chris. Eric Broadley's most beautiful and innovative design, the T70 pushed sports racing into the future
1966 Can-Am Champion John Surtees
Dan Gurney, despite a smaller team, on pole at Riverside 1967
Mark Donohue in Sunoco colors

this month's MotorSport is actually very good, a bumper issue that covers a number of subjects and leading the editorials is an article by Gary Watkins about sports car racing, with great pictures of the Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche, Vanwall [yup the name is back!!] Cadillac, Glickenhaus, Lamborghini. BMW, Acura, Alpine and Peugeot, great Q+A's with the team principals, sadly it doesn't look like any current F1 drivers are scheduled to drive any of these beasts but for the 1st time in years this is looking very exciting, and I for one was looking forward to seeing them in action 2023/24 only to discover there are no scheduled races in the UK in 2023, utter dismay, and only six races planned, so disappointed, I mean all the investment to get these cars and their technology and we have no races in the UK? my word whatever happened to common sense, surely there will be some pressure to extend the series in 2024? I hope so - I really do
and where is Jaguar? What with the red cars returning, surely the Jags will follow?

Chris, the WEC calendar for 2023 looks very short indeed but there's also Le Mans of course. But I agree, that would only make 7 races and what a shame and how strange they are not racing in the UK. The IMSA calendar looks much better with 13 races.
Some teams will participate in both championships and others not. Ferrari will only do WEC for now. Porsche will do IMSA but also Le Mans. Not sure yet how this will all work out but let's wait and see. But seeing all those big names back in sportscar racing looks very good and exciting. I will surely do the Spa 6hrs.

Spa 6 hrs ticket in the house! Not exactly the first 6hrs I will attend but the first with Ferrari back as a works entry. Magic.

Will you be wandering around during the race or stay in the same awesome grandstand at the exit of Eau Rouge? I think six hours is the perfect length for an endurance race. Enjoy!
P.S.- Your condensing F1 and MotoGP into archives was well done.

I will most certainly walk around the track Carl. Of course a little bit dependent on the weather but if the weather is only half good it's simply the best thing to do. The paddock area is always nice because you can see the cars and teams up close but wandering around a track like Spa is not exactly a punishment for a racing fan! Almost every corner is fantastic to watch the cars in action.
And with events like these it will not be totally overcrowded like with F1, there's still room to move! But I do expect it to be more crowded now Ferrari is back in the game. That will attract more fans for sure.

I always wandered around Riverside Raceway during practice and qualifying, and as much as possible at Long Beach, the congestion of the city presenting more of a challenge. But, like you, I always wanted to see interesting corners as close as possible, and a great course has no other kind. The view from Turn 6 at Riverside was so comprehensive that on raceday I was happy just to stay in my seat with sandwiches and a thermos of coffee prepared at home.

aw that is brilliant Rene, I really think we are entering a brilliant era of sports cars,
I used to walk around Brands and Silverstone, well Silverstone before they restricted so many areas for grandstands, hence my nickname 'fortress' but walking around Brands was great, especially in their 6 hour race, obviously not for the Grand Prix's. I Liked to walk around and view most circuits in the UK I visited, including the hill climbs, from different perspectives, so walking around the 'best' European circuit of them all Rene must be awesome, mind you I doubt my fitness levels would enable me to walk around Spa even in 6 hours

Never been to Brands but that always looked like such a brilliant track on TV. I will take it easy on my track walk and it's a whole day and maybe two if I go to the qualifying so all the time in the world. But I will certainly feel it in my body the day after as some of the hills at Spa are very steep! Good exercise!
