Back in Europe and another classic this weekend on the super fast Silverstone track. I know it’s not entirely the original but it’s still a great place to go racing. Red Bull or Ferrari? It’s anyone’s guess. Charles Leclerc is penalty free this weekend so pole position is certainly on the cards. Ferrari must take the initiative back and start reeling in Red Bull and Max. It must start this weekend before it’s too late. For the sake of the championship (and my health )! There are also high hopes that Mercedes will perform strong at Silverstone. They say they have a better grip on the porpoising issues and with two British drivers, expectations are high. Expectations are also high for McLaren so hopefully they'll find the way back up again on home soil. A good result for Lando would be nice.
Bring it on!

Looking good so far. Carlos is obviously on a roll and the Ferrari looked super strong on mediums. Strong FP2 also for Lewis and Lando to give the fans something to cheer for. ‘Only’ p4 and 5 for Max and Charles but they will be there tomorrow. I see a Ferrari front row lockout…..

Well, not a front row lockout but pole position for Ferrari nonetheless! Finally, first pole for Carlos Sainz!
You could argue he was a bit lucky that Max and Charles could not put it together in the last lap (Max had a yellow) but that's the way it is. Smooth operator. Tomorrow is another day and I hope Carlos and Charles can play it smart and keep Max behind them. Won't be easy but not impossible either.
Checo was a bit invisible but still in p4. Lewis best of the British drivers in front of Lando and George a bit disappointing in 8th. Fernando smart again on p7 and another strong performance by Zhou Guanyu in 9th, outperforming Valtteri again. Nicolas Latifi had his best F1 qualy finishing in 10th. _
The Aston Martin is clearly a very bad car! Sebastian in p18 says it all. These are conditions where he's normally very good. Must be frustrating. Daniel Ricciardo seems lost.... how is that possible? Obviously no confidence which was always a strong trait of his.

I believe he's lost a good amount of confidence by never being named as number one driver, and occasional unfair treatment within his team, for example having to share blame for the collision at Baku that was clearly Verstappen's fault.

Yep I agree Carl. Red Bull's response to the Baku incident was unfair and it made very clear who 'the chosen one' was. Thus Danny's move to Renault was understandable even if he probably had won a few more races at Red Bull had he stayed. But then he would have been Max's Bottas.
If I think back of the 2014 Danny who made a sensational debut at Red Bull by winning 3 races and outshining Vettel, that was a different guy. So pumped up with energy and confidence...
So what's next for the Aussie? Can't see him staying at McLaren.

I have no access to Formula One broadcasts, apparently because of a contract dispute. News reports have Formula One demanding a huge increase from ESPN because of the popularity of the Netflix staged reality soap opera, Drive to Survive. There is an existing contract on paper, but corporate hissy fits have precedence, as there was no broadcast of qualifying and none today. Instead, I was treated both days to frolicking on the lawn at Wimbledon.
The worst part is not being able to hear the dulcet tones of my favorite ponderous fool.

Sensational race and well done to Carlos! Very happy for him but at the same time disappointed for Charles who would have won this race without the safety car. But the way Charles drove and fought those last laps against Lewis and Sergio was phenomenal, very much like Gilles!
Nice for the fans to have Lewis back up there again. Good race from him.
And unbelievable that both Zhou and Alex came off unharmed after that mayhem. Another life saved by the halo…

Good race and well done to Carlos. However, I hope this season doesn't turn out like 1983 did for Ferrari whereby they should have won the championship quite easily had they concentrated on the better driver ie Tambay and not let the internal politics impact on his support within the team. At the end of the season Tambay, considered by Forgheri to be a brilliant test driver, left the team and the team sunk back quite quickly to also ran status by 1986.
Charles is the quicker driver and Ferrari should be supporting him to the hilt. They need to sharpen up their race strategy skills. Ross Brawn would never have let a 1-2 slip away like that.

Yes Rob, I very much agree. I know not everyone is in favor of team orders but I also think Ferrari should have played everything on Leclerc from the start. He is the better and faster driver of the two and he was stuck behind Sainz for too long. Of course it was a difficult choice because you don't want to demote Carlos but you're right about Ross Brawn. This would not have happened under his guidance.
When Carlos pitted during the safety car I thought for a second it was Charles and when I realized it wasn't I thought "sh**, now he's f*****d." They should have pitted Leclerc. Even if the others had stayed out he would have been in fourth position with fresh softs. Given his race speed he would have won easily. Charles has every right to be angry and disappointed about what happened even if it was great to see Carlos finally win.

A short feel good clip. Seb in Mansell’s red 5. Wonderful sounds! Here is another great Williams moment at Silverstone, when Nigel Mansell caught and passed Nelson Piquet on the approach to Stowe Corner. Mansell had fresher tyres and the English crowd on his side, so it may not have been entirely fair, but for Piquet, fairness never mattered. One of the great passes, starting at the 7:15 point in the highlight film. Pay no mind to the notice, simply click on the YouTube link and enjoy
