Finally we’re back in Australia after a two year hiatus! I am sure this will feel soooo good for the entire circus and all the fans down under. COVID-19 is not completely gone yet and a driver can still miss one or two races if he gets infected but for the rest, life is pretty much back to normal. An acceptable risk shall we say. So back in Melbourne with a revised track. Several turns (and the pitlane) have been widened and the old turn 9/10 chicane is now gone. The track will be faster and hopefully these changes will improve the overall racing.
What to expect this weekend? In all likelihood, Ferrari and Red Bull will continue with their battle for the win. I don't see any other team capable of challenging them since the gap between the leading teams and ‘best of the rest’ Mercedes is still quite substantial. I am sure Mercedes will crawl back but I can’t see them going for the win this weekend. But who knows, if they get the porpoising under control that will be a major step.
And then of course there is Haas and Alfa Romeo. Magnussen and Bottas are two happy chappies I guess being much more competitive than expected.
It is going to be a great race weekend!

Going for Charles again. Heart and Mind in sync. This year there are four DRS zones so that shall be interesting. I can't see the Mercs being competitive enough for a win in normal circumstances though they are bringing a less draggy wing. It appears they will have to redesign the floor as well.

Got to be Charles. According to some with too much time on their hands we are seeing Leclerc 2.0 this year, absolute nonsense the difference is that the boy has got a decent car underneath him in 2022.
Also another great result for Kevin and Haas, plus another good showing by Valterri who seems to be flourishing at Alfa Romeo.

I agree with you about Charles, he's not all of a sudden a much better driver. The difference is the quality of the car. Same goes for Hamilton but then in reverse.
Like all the talk last year about Lewis and Max being the best drivers of the year, on a different level as some commentators said. Of course they are good, we know that, but there are a few other drivers who could've done the same if they had been in the Merc or Bull. It's always been like that. And having the best car underneath you for 7-8 years in a row doesn't necessarily make you the outright best driver over that period. Yeah, besides Ferrari I am also rooting for Kevin and Valtteri to do well.

Peter Windsor's podcasts during and straight after the GP weekend always provide some good information. He has long put Charles in the same bracket as Max and Lewis and above all the rest.
He should have some idea as he has been part of F1 since the 70s.

Both Ferrari's looking strong in the first two sessions. Good to hear that Charles has had a swipe at the stupid "Leclerc 2.0" reference by idle and ill informed "journalists".
I agree René, and said as much last year, about the constant comments by those in TV commentary who kept on about Max and Lewis being the two greatest of the current era. Even Martin Brundle became wrapped up in this and he of all people should have known better. Put simply they were two of the best who had the fortune to have the best vehicles at their disposal.
Yes I would like to have seen what Charles or a few others could have done in the Merc and Bull(ish), but more tellingly what Verstappen and Hamilton would have done in that 2020/21 Ferrari.

Personally I think hie is a mixture of both JYS and Gilles, and maybe even Ayrton without the paranoia.

I haven't really had a driver I have liked as a person as well as for their ability since Aryton was killed but Charles fits that position for me now.

I have only read the results and not seen any of the action but it appears the popular choice has bagged pole. with Max in second, surprises to me are the Mercs and Lando, I don't know about you chaps but it does feel so good to be back on a 'proper' track, and well done Australia with your circuit changes, to me this is how you make a circuit both challenging and rewarding at the same time,

Whoohaaah, fantastic! Pole position for Charles Leclerc! And what a lap that was, almost 3 tenth faster in the end than Max. That was really Senna-esque, very good.
Carlos was very unlucky when he had his lap aborted due to the red flag. That lap would have put him 4th. Then they had a problem restarting the Ferrari after the break and Carlos had not enough time to bring his tyres up to temp. He has some work to do tomorrow. The Red Bulls both looked strong even if Max was complaining about the balance. But P2 and P3 is simply very good.
Great to see Lando in the McLaren in 4th and Daniel 7th. They must feel some relieve to see there is actually pace in that car.
The same goes in a way for Mercedes in 5th and 6th but they are 1 second behind pole which is still a lot. The pace of the Alpine in Alonso's hands was also impressive by the way. A shame he crashed but that car looked very good.
... oh yes, that crash between the two Canadians... what can you say? That's not F1 level is it. Not from both of them, how silly that looked.
