Don't know what happened to me but all of a sudden I bought a 1:18 scale model of a Lotus! Only recently I saw this model on a web shop that I visit now and then and was immediately struck by its good looks and the price tag which was really cheap! The model is made by 'Model Car Group' who've been around for quite a while but they only made road car models. But recently they introduced a new series of classic Grand Prix cars that really look the part. I also read a few positive reviews so I took the plunge and bought this wonderful JPS Lotus 79. And it wasn’t really a big plunge as I only payed 50 euros for it (normal price is between 55 and 60 but I also had a Black friday discount)! What can you lose? The car looks absolutley stunning, certainly for that price. It is not high end like an Exoto, Looksmart or GP Replicas model in terms of super fine detail. But the overall proportions, the paint finish and sponsor decals are all crisp and sharp. Spot on really. Also really like the fact they put rain tires on it, great detail. And the aforementioned brands are way more expensive, five or six times the price of this one at least. The only problem I have now is to restrain myself not buying more models from this series…. however, I will buy the 1977 Ferrari 312T2 that will be released soon, but that is allowed. Here it is...

That is really nice Rene and a very good price for 1/18 plus it has the JPS decals which is pretty rare these days. A good buy all in all methinks.

Actually I only collect Ferrari static models but I couldn't resist this one. It's such an iconic car and it looks nice on a shelf in my mancave.
As for the JPS decals, I believe when a tobacco company no longer exists it is allowed after a certain time to use their logos. The McLarens for instance are sold without Marlboro logos but there is a decal sheet included for the collector.

That is a really good model for the price and at that scale of 1/18th. I think that models were allowed to have cigarette advertising on them if as René suggests that the brand was now defunct, and that came into being a few years ago. I have the large scale die cast made by Minichamps of Ronnie's Lotus 79 but this comes without the JPS signage which makes it look rather bare, although I believe you can obtain it from other sources for the model. Yes the models look good with the gold decals but as I have mentioned before the actual cars of 1979 were actually finished in "Sign Writers Gold" which was a sort of dark(ish) beige colour. Apparently it showed up better in photos and on TV screens than real gold colouring. Back in the day the only model manufacturer who actually got this right were white kit manufacturer Western Models. Still looks fantastic in gold however .

And of course Ronnie is on pole! I purchased the model from German shop CK-Modelcars. This is the link to the product page: ck-modelcars.de/en/l/t-suche/a-18/?s=Mcg+formula+1But maybe it’s easier to buy from a shop in the UK. I found this one but I’m sure there are more. Link: formulamodelshop.co.uk/product-category/models/model-car-group-models/They are going to release quite an extensive range of Grand Prix cars. If they do a P34 six wheeler I’m not sure I can resist….

Returning to my earlier comment about the signage on the Lotus 79, I have done Minichamps a huge disservice as I have just checked my large scale version and it does indeed have the decals in Sign Writers Gold, many apologies Minichamps.
The comment of Carl's about Ronnie on pole for that race in Austria 1978 raised a wry smile as it was disclosed afterwards that Ronnie gained some payback on Colin Chapman that day for all the nonsense he had got up to trying to slow Ronnie down in qualifying throughout the year. Ronnie had just come into the pits after recording the lap and as it was in changeable conditions, things were uncertain about whether any more laps could be done. Chapman asked Ronnie what he thought and Ronnie with a glint in his eye said that they were getting worse and not much point going out again for either him or Mario.
In actual fact the track was pretty stable at that time and they could have had another go, shame Colin showed such disrespect to Ronnie but it came back to bite him in the end with this little scenario.
