Following my upload of the brilliant little film of the first season of Formula Junior in the Uk in 1960's, I have some more that are simply outstanding. The first one that I came across on YouTube was a film made in 1969 and featured two race meetings. We start with a Club Race at Rufforth Airfield which is so illuminating as it shows the club setting up the track and has some lovely old fashioned English humour as well.
In the following film we have the very first international race meeting held at the marvellous Cadwell Park, often referred to back in the day as a mini Nurburgring. Sadly international car racing no longer happens at cadwell but it has a superb British Superbike round in August of every year. The layout of the track remains largely unchanged but it has bigger areas of grass run off's and isn't quite so park like as in this film.
The first international race was for Formula Three cars and these little one litre "screamers" were just ideal for such a track. As far as the entry is concerned it was quite outstanding and had so many future stars taking part. For me obviously Ronnie Peterson was the biggest name on the list and he was driving the very first car produced by March, the 693. Ronnie had a sensational season in his own Tecno car, winning at the prestigious Monaco F3 race earlier in the year, however the March wasn't the best thing. In fact a few weeks later Ronnie could well have been killed in a terrible accident at Montlery when the car clipped a straw bale and turned over which then turned into a blazing inferno, "Super Swede" scrambled out with some nasty burns old his hands but otherwise unscathed.
Also on the list are the likes of Tim Schenken; Howden Ganley; Reine Wisell and a fast but inexperienced James Hunt, all of whom drove in F1 at varying levels of fame. James of course being a World Champion and hugely well known, the former three probably did not achieve anything like their abilities deserved. Also on the list in a Tecno was Jean-Pierre Jaussaud who was an outstanding driver in the lower formulas and a twice Le mans winner.
A fabulous film.
