Again later in the year than usual due to the ongoing pandemic but we’re back at La Sarthe! The first time with the new Hypercar format and it could be a good race between Toyota and Alpine. The Toyota is a bit faster and there are questions regarding the Alpine’s fuel range but it’s a long race so anything can happen. An Alpine victory at Le Mans would be something! To get in the mood, here’s some beautifully restored footage of the 1963 event that was won by Bandini and Scarfiotti in a Ferrari 250P. The classic Le Mans start and the Ferrari pit stops are something special to see!

What a fantastic vantage point for those lying prone on the grass bank opposite the pits! I wonder if anyone spent the night there, or could sleep at all if they tried. So many great drivers and famous faces. The dedication of John Surtees is clear by his athletic leap out of #23 Ferrari, back damp with sweat. At 2:40 in the film, the white-helmeted Jim Hall appears in the Ferrari 330 LMB he shared with Dan Gurney. Cheers, Carl

There's something magical about the racing of the 60's and 70's. It's hard to beat in terms of fascination, even though the speed went up and up through the years that followed.

A very deserved win for Toyota and this time finally the #7 car of Kobayashi, Conway and Lopez that took the chequered flag first.
There was some good racing and the pictures from Le Mans are always great to watch but it will only get really interesting when first Peugeot next year and then Ferrari in 2023 and hopefully Porsche or Audi will join in.

Having watched the first few hours on Saturday I then tuned out until around midnight and watched some action in the dark, however I must say that sustaining my interest this year was difficult. I find that with only one big team (Toyota) in the main class is not really that inspiring to me. This class reminded me of F1 should we end up with say Mercedes Benz only competing against the likes of Haas and Williams.
The future does bode well with Peugeot coming in and Ferrari, plus we hear that some of the VW Group will also be coming back, and today it has been announced that Cadillac will be entering a factory team with Ganassi using a Dallara chassis, and this will be for IMSA and WEC. This is what we need in the premier class.
