I know that you were not saying the Ferrari 712 was good looking René, so no worries there. It was an awful looking and performing thing. Those Racer models are now getting quite rare, or so i hear, beautiful things if a little overcall according to some experts. I have one in my collection, the lovely Alfa Romeo T33/3 from Buenos Aires 1970 driven by Andrea de Adamich and Piers Courage, a beautiful car, and i am devoted to T33's for some strange reason!! Just waiting for Slot-It to finally bring out Ronnie's Watkins Glen winner of 1971 . Jamie I am certain Carl will point you in the right direction with regard to suitable Can-Am books, as he is the man. However you cannot go far wrong with anything written by Pete Lyons, as i am sure carl will attest.

Rene, I remember that STP sponsored 917 because I normally rooted for "Seppi" Siffert. Somehow since then I came to believe the turbocharged model was the first 917-10. By 1971 many fans had grown tired of McLaren's (well-earned) domination and hoped a brilliant driver in a new Porsche would challenge Denis Hulme and Peter Revson in their M8Fs. The following year, with Roger Penske, Mark Donohue and Porsche's 1000 bhp turbocharged twelve, the tables completely turned. Donohue was sidelined by injury early, I believe at Mosport, and George Follmer, Penske's favorite number two, became champion. McLaren's beautiful M20 (see my avatar) was so close to the Porsche's speed, tantalizingly near, but ultimately McLaren decided they would never beat Porsche and left the series. I was at Riverside in 1972 when the 917-10's top speed was 219 mph on the long main straight, never bettered because the next year, Mark Donohue's prediction of 250 mph in the 917-30 convinced track management to effectively halve the straight by using the short course. Everyone was disappointed that prudence was given precedence over spectacle. The acceleration of the 917-10 had seemed like an illusion and we wanted more. Cheers, Carl I once read an anecdote about the 917/30 that it was so fast it tore the stickers off the bodywork at full speed! Don't know if it's true but just the idea alone is very cool!

Carl / All - Do you have any recommendations for a book covering the history of the Can-Am series - such a tome is a glaring omission from my little library. Jamie, I have "Can-Am Photo History" by Pete Lyons, indeed as JC already mentioned. It's a wonderful book with beautiful photos but also enough text for a good read. I can recommend it.

The Alfa racers of that era on the other hand are most certainly very beautiful cars. No argument there.

"...you cannot go far wrong with anything written by Pete Lyons..." Absolutely right, John Charles. Sadly, the very best by Pete Lyons, a definitive history simply called Can-Am, is out of print, both hardcover and softcover, but copies can be had for an exorbitant price. Patience is a virtue and I would hope demand will prompt a new edition. Attachment Deleted

Jamie, The very best history of Can-Am is sadly out of print, both hardcover and softcover. Written about 25 years ago by Pete Lyons and simply titled "Can-Am", it's a beautifully written comprehensive history of the series' peak years 1966-1974. It's difficult to understand why the only copies now available are sold online by extortionists. Hopefully, renewed demand will prompt a new edition. There are other wonderful Can-Am books by Pete Lyons. Both Rene's suggestion of "Can-Am Photo History" and JC's advice that "you cannot go far wrong with anything written by Pete Lyons" are excellent. Cheers, Carl Attachment Deleted

Jamie, is it Chris Pook who always seems to have out of print books? I know they tend to be expensive as I was looking for Mon-Ami_mate but recoiling at the £120 price tag, I also have bought several books from Abe books?
chaps? is it an idea to share our purchasing experience? without prejudice of course?

Chris,
I have used Abe Books myself to purchase a copy of Peter Revson's "Speed With Style" which was used but in good condition and a good buying experience, so can also recommend them.
All this chat about Pete Lyons Can Am book reminded me that I do not have a copy, and so with the info from Carl I did a bit of digging and have just ordered a near new copy from Amazon (tax dodgers) for the princely sum of £37.00, so very happy with that as they ere advertising new copies at over £100!!!
Great idea about sharing purchasing experiences Chris.

I just managed to snag myself a copy of Can-Am on fleabay, looking forward to receiving it even though I’m amassing a bit of a back log now. Pooling our libraries would be an interesting exercise and sharing buying experiences can only be a good thing 👍

JC John Charles, If it's in good condition that's a great price! I think I paid about $50 when the book was newly published two decades ago. Jamie and John Charles, It's a wonderfully written history of an epic series by a great writer in love with the entire concept. You'll love it. Cheers, Carl

Carl,
Many thanks for confirming what i believed myself to be a good price. i am assured it is near mint in condition so bought with confidence. Unfortunately I won't set eyes on it until mid February 2018 as i am having it sent to my friends home in the Uk rather than risk the French postal system who aren't that "kind" to packages at times.
I know the wait will be worth while.

Those Racer models are now getting quite rare, or so i hear, beautiful things if a little overcall according to some experts. They have both the short tail 33TT12 1973 and the long tail with high airbox 1975 version. Very detailed and great runners. SRC also has Ronnie's 312PB Buenos Aires 1000km car in its collection.

René, I am trying hard to sit on my hands when it comes to slot car models at the moment. Agreed the SRC Alfa T33/3's are beautiful and very; very tempting, as is the Ronnie 312PB from Argentina, but common sense is prevailing.......just . These T33/3's were known in the day as "Bat Mobiles" due to their exotic bodywork; great cars but only really became successful after Matra withdrew from the WSC. JC
