Just read the sad news about the passing of Johnny Dumfries at a way too early age, he was only 62. His F1 career was probably not what he hoped for but he was a damn good sportscar driver and Le Mans winner. Rest in peace John Crichton-Stuart, aka Johnny Dumfries.

I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny in F3 and in F1 - remembering the Lotus team paying him respect at Australia by wearing kilts - he was a very good driver who definitely deserved better and from all accounts a really good bloke with a wicked sense of humour, I was so saddened to hear this news, 62 is no age and his attempts to host a Scottish 'Goodwood' which sadly floundered will always be remembered. rest in peace Johnny
so sad that in a week we have lost Murray, Sabine and Johnny, the latter two because of that wretched illness cancer -

Yep very sad. I lost a friend to cancer last week. He was only 65. Murray Walker also had lymphatic cancer a few years back but went into remission.

Very sad to hear about Johnny's death. The first thing that came to my mind was his epic Le Mans '88 victory together with Andy Wallace & Jan Lammers. The motorsports world has paid dearly the last few days.

Such sad news about Johnny Dumfries' passing at the all too young age of 62, this terrible thing is still all too often claiming lives. Lost my mum when she was just 60 and her elder sister (Scott's great grand mother) succumbed when she was in her early 30's.
I did see a picture of Johnny a few months back and wondered why he was what appeared to be shaven headed, that would account for the reason. There was also a really nice piece in Motorsort featuring him a few months back as well. In this he mentioned that it wasn't to easy being at Lotus with Senna who was completely uncommunicative and not very helpful as a team mate; he also said he had numerous gearbox failures which made the season even worse.
Johnny was pretty darn quick and should really have gone on to great success after that outstanding British F3 season driving Dave Price's bright red Ralt. he also won quite a few European F3 championship rounds as well and did not do the full season, still finished runner up to Ivan Capelli though.

Cancer is a vile disease that takes away far too many far too soon, it is really personal and affects so many of us, me included and I wish upon wish I never have to read of another tragedy due to its wretchedness
Johnny was a real character, the stories of him whilst a van driver at Williams and his stories were legend, a down to earth Earl, something that is treasured, when the lockdown lifts I will look at a trip firstly to Duns and then ride across to Dumfries to pay respect but my word he was good and his big opportunity with Lotus was very badly managed and deprived us of another possible Scottish GP winner

Yep RIP Johnny Dumfries. I was sad at the time that his year at Lotus went the way it did. He deserved a second chance at F1

Just thought I would add this as a sort of tribute to Johnny. I took this photo of him during his dominant British F3 Championship year driving his red Dave Price Ralt RT3 at Silverstone. It is a quick scan from a B&W print I had to hand quite by chance.
