A little throw back in time... enjoy. René, Thank you for a very well done summary of a momentous LeMans. Among the most beautiful cars is the NART entered Ferrari 312P , the Ligier JS1 driven by some Guy named Ligier, and the Chevron B16. The big 5 litre Porsches and Ferraris that impressed me tremendously at the time haven't aged well.
That was my European summer and I believe my friend and I were newly arrived in Amsterdam when the 24 Hours took place. A few weeks before, we had been in Beverly Hills to consult with our travel agent and saw Steve McQueen as we were leaving. He was pacing on the sidewalk close to a gorgeous blue 911 that was probably his, and not too happy about something. I wanted to ask about his forthcoming film, but we both sensed his mood and left him alone.

superb! I do so love the brutes and the beauty of that era, one of the many things I enjoyed about that and the Group C era was teams like Porsche selling the same cars as they raced to privateers, wouldn't it have been great for todays racing if Audi or Porsche sold their cars off to private teams to compete with Toyota, sadly not

This race featured some pretty extreme weather conditions with a downpour of rain that was to use a favoured modern expression "biblical". Quite by chance I came across the attached image the other day which illustrates it all too well with the winning Porsche 917 of Richard Attwood and Hans Hermann at the height of the storm, a truly outstanding photograph.

Looking at that photo I cannot even imagine what one of those beast must have been like to drive in those conditions. Today they wouldn't even be running behind a safety car in rain like that.
Absolutely amazing and scary, my admiration for those drivers is off the scale.

and mine too, I rode a bike at speeds which I wouldn't like to share in conditions like that once, my excuse was that my companions were all going that speed, which on reflection wasn't one of my brightest moments, and it was awful, but what it would have been like racing a monster like the above at the speeds they were going, my respect deepens - but wow would I like to try a 917 in any conditions
incidentally I understand Audi are dropping out of Formula E and returning to WEC, yesssss
