Thanks Carl that is good information regarding Jan lammers and his mentor. Incidentally I think the "Hawkeye" that Chris is referring to is Paul Hawkins the larger than life Australian driver who notably emulated Alberto Ascari in ending up in the harbour at Monaco. A fine sport car racer who had great success in his own cars always finished in bright red but sadly perished at Oulton Park in his Lola T70 Mk111B. Also could this photo be Jan Lammers with his wife to be and mother on René Lammers? Actually, that is a former girlfriend, somewhere in the early eighties I would say. He is now married to Mariska. Mariska, René and Jan in the car

Rene, had a quick look for the book, it was advertised on ebay for £200 - which is a bit beyond my price range but I will keep looking out for it,

Whoever the young lady was she was very attractive and reminds me a great deal of the lovely Agnetha from ABBA one of my all time favourite ladies . You may well be correct about it being the early 1980's but it could also be the mid/late 1970's as I have a feeling that his F3 Ralt was Marlboro sponsored. Incidentally on my computers the photo you have attached above is not available.

It came to me last evening while having a bit of a muse that there was another quite big one make series around the early 1980's which was a bit like BMW ProCars and featured Renault R5 Gt Turbo's. I am referring to the mid engined wide arched machines that did quite well in Rallying around the same period. Jan Lammers was in this series if memory serves me correctly and I recall seeing a round at Donington Park which I think Jan was victorious and his R5 Turbo was sponsored by Marlboro. He always seemed to go well there as he won the BMW ProCar race at Donington a photo of which I posted a while back in the Members Only section.

I adored those Renaults, they looked so mean and went like sxxt - great cars, I am trying to remember the race at Donington, not sure if I was there or not, so many races, must look it up - always wanted a road version,

That's the one René, Jan was awesome in that car and probably why he became such an outstanding sport car racer.
As you say Chris they were fabulous little cars and to think they did not cost that much to buy either especially a few years ago on the used car market, now they are rapidly becoming collectors items.

The death of a very talented and popular Renault factory driver inspired two of his friends into action which eventually changed history. Patrick Jacquemart had dominated the IMSA GTU (under 2 litre sedan) series and he and his R5 Turbo were a phenomenon and hugely popular.

great picture Rene, they really were beasties,
did they race at Birmingham as a support for the F3000?
John I did always want one but now, beyond price range
Carl, strange Renault never sold this car in the USA, I would have thought it would have gone down well, and through tragedy comes safety, the HANS device may not look elegant but it is mightily effective and I am wondering when something like this comes into motor bike crash helmets, as I would wear one, but great article mate
