Back in around 2002 I was lent a Mazda RX8 for an evening. What a treat and what a glorious noise.

I came across this very nice - and short, to the point - animation of the working principle of the Wankel engine. It gives a good hint regarding the sound: every time an edge of the triangular rotor is about to pass the the spark plugs they ignite a fresh portion of gas mixture, very similar to a two-stroke engine (where ignition takes place every time the piston has just passed(*) the "top dead center"). So this engine is really much closer to the two-stroke engine than to the four stroke engine. (Hence also the two stroke engine-like fuel economy ...)
(*) Edit: if I remember correctly, then the ignition actually takes a bit before the top dead center (t.d.c.) in order to obtain a pressure maximum just after the t.d.c.

Oh! Dear me. Spark have just released a model of Jan Lammers iconic Samson Shag sponsored Shadow DN9, the car from practice at Monaco in 1979. Probably the car with the most amazing graphics ever put on an F1 car. I just have to get this one as I have longed for a model of this car since I first saw pictures of the car, it is amazing. This same company have also released another version of the Shadow DN5; Tom Price's Greman GP car from 1975. Models of the DN5 seem to end up demanding hugely inflated prices due to their popularity might have to get one of these as well .

Talking of the Shadow DN5 Studio 27 make a very nice kit in 1:20 scale. I keep toying with the idea of getting one from Grand Prix Models but they are very expensive.

Rob, There is something about the Shadow DN5 that just draws people in. It was a fabulous looking race car especially in that gloss black and those bright coloured segments just before the radiator inlets. In modelling circles they really do seem to attract a lot of interest and as I mentioned above the limited edition Spark models fetch stupid asking money once they are sold out; they also do a 1/18th scale version of Jarier's car which will rise in value soon. I am minded to purchase two of each model from now on if one is to believe the inflated prices of out of production models are to be believed. Currently most models when released are at around £58 - £70 each for 1/43rd scale and after a year out of production the popular ones are now on sale for somewhere around £130 - £275!!! JC

My Shadow purchase has been put on hold in favour of the pending 1/12 Tyrrell 006 due to release from MFH at the end of the month.

A 1/12th scale MFH Tyrrell 006 should be an amazing project, I bet that doesn't come cheap, but so what it will be stunning to build and look at when finished. I suddenly remembered that somewhere in my boxes of unbuilt kits I have the Tameo 1/43rd white metal kit of the Tyrrell 006; and a Lotus 25. Both super detailed, but am I up to building them now? That is the question.

That is the question. Yep Charles I had one of those Tameo 006 Kits, I think part of the World Champions set. Lovely Kit but a tremendous amount of work and yes, sometimes one really needs to take a deep breath when starting on one of these builds. I am currently working on a 1/12 Eagle and a 1/20 Ferrari 312B. Just drilling out the rivet holes and replacing them with scale resin rivets has taken over 20 hours so far, on each kit.

I saw Jan at Zandvoort in that car in '79 where I made this picture: It's also a car that I want on my slot track. There is no shell available as far as I know so have to make something myself but there is a decal set at Pattos Place. Another project...

I saw Lionel Lammers' Shadow at Long Beach and no other car came close to its beauty. I like the super cool Middle Ages depiction of a lion...

Goodness me a 1/12th scale Eagle Weslake, that must surely be the ultimate model race car, I would wager that it will be astonishing. I cannot wait to see some pictures of your build Rob. Luca Tameo did indeed produce a Championship Winning range that included the Tyrrell 006 and these were the beginning of him making vastly more complex kits.
Moving to the Shadow DN9. I really like you photo René, the cars are ideally placed and sharp, but what sets this photograph off is the crowd in the foreground. It represents brilliantly how things were back in those days, and that is how motor sport should be watched. i also liked the ARMCO barriers either side of the track and on the opposite side the "dreaded" catch fencing also so typical of the 1970's early 1980's.
If you are minded to scratch build a Shadow DN9 in 1/32nd scale then I have some drawings of the car that my former business partner in our little magazine produced. They are pretty good and were actually used by producer of 1/43rd white metal kits at the time. However as the producer Mikansue Models mainly concentrated on British road cars of an historical content they did not make the Samson Shag car only the more graphically basic Elio de Angelis car.

I am a bit hazy on the detail but they were talking about a race meeting commemorating Tom Pryce on BBC Radio Wales earlier this year, I think it may have been at Pembray. Tom is due something like that as he should be a Welsh hero, sadly held back by driving for Shadow after the initial success of the brilliant Shadow DN5.
He really should have won that 1975 British GP, but the heavens opened and ruined everything that day.
