I was waiting for your reaction, Rob. Yes indeed, Austrian driver Helmut Koinigg who so tragically died in a crash in the 1974 US Grand Prix, only his second Grand Prix start.

Hans Stuck Jr. on Saint Valentine's Day That is quite funny, despite the tragic story behind the photo.

We recently talked about Jochen Rindt, and, as I understand it, the main reason for the severeness of the accidents of both men (Rindt and Koinigg) was essentially the same, namely that the steel barriers weren't installed properly (i.e., some bolts were missing, I guess). Amazing that something like this could happen repeatedly at that time, within a span of a just a few years - and, in particular, that the circuit owners didn't care enough to spend a day, say, on checking if what they had paid for actually also had been done properly.

Mikael what is worse is that Francois Cevert was killed at the same track as Helmuth Koinigg the year before also due to the guard rails not being installed properly. At the Spanish GP at Montjuich in 1975 Rolf Stommelen flew into the crowd killing a number of spectators when the guard rail collapsed and. launched him into the air.

It rings a bell... far away... but I would have to look that one up. The car is a Minardi for sure from the early 2000s.

Yes, the car is indeed a Minardi, and we're in the early part of the 00's; but the driver is not Fernando Alonso

I don’t think it was a regular driver. Probably a young talented guy doing a test?

No, also not Jos Verstappen. But the year is correct! (and so is the team :-) )
The driver in question was actually regular driver; and the photo is from one of his GP's - it was not a "one off" kind of thing.
A hint: the driver was "taken on" (by Minardi) in the latter part of the season. Unfortunately (for him), his performances were not strong enough to merit a continuation of the contract for the following year.
Below is somewhat better photo.
