Another thing that might have come directly from F1 is the paddle (semi-automatic gear) shift.
At the time it first appeared I recall a friend saying, "once you've tried it you'd newer want to use anything else". But I'm really not so sure ... Honestly, I love the good, old-fashioned manual gear shift. The most satisfying gearshifts come courtesy of a shift lever that "falls readily to hand". Wrist movement was all you needed to change gear in a friend's 1966 Lotus Elan.

Honestly, I love the good, old-fashioned manual gear shift. I have owned many different Alfa's and they all had manual gear shift. They were all lovely to drive but I paricularly remember my 166 with a 3.0 V6 engine and a super smooth transmission. What a joy that car was! Now I drive a Lexus which has an automatic transmission. Sounds kinda boring and daft for a motorsport fan... . It's comfortable though! Here's a nice Autosport/Giorgio Piola video on John Barnard's Ferrari 640, the first F1 car with paddle shifting.
