does anyone else remember the Airfix version of scalextric? we had that as children, I did prefer it to scalextric but it didn't seem to have caught on Chris, The Airfix version was not as popular as Scalextric but was a good set up and to this day it has its followers although long out of production. People who have an Airfix track swear by them and lots of slot car enthusiasts try to acquire sets when they come up for sale. The cars were quite good for the 1960's and had unique steering which added to realism. I think I am correct in saying that in the late 1960's Airfix acquired MRRC and produced some very good slot car models, for me the best being a lovely version of the 1965 F1 BRM P261. They also produced a four wheel drive Indy Novi which had full ball bearing ankle bearings and was very complicated for the time. JC

With its four wheel drive it must have been the predecessor to the Paxton Turbine car and then the wonderful wedge shaped Lotus 56 Turbine. As an aside what a tragedy that we never got to see Jim Clark race the Lotus 56, although he did test the car prior to that terrible April 7th 1968.

Yep, I have decided on the Ronnie version. I've got quite a few Super Swede slot cars by now... Has to be right doing the Ronnie version, I am tempted myself having been on Pendle's web site. £64(ish) for the full kit is quite tasty however and will I ever get to build it up? I have a box full of kits that I plan to build when I'm retired...

I have a box full of kits that I plan to build when I'm retired... Ah! That strange word "retire", something that many imagine that they do after finishing full-time employment only to find that they are often busier than when working . I have in all probability around 200 unbuilt 1/43rd scale kits that have not been touched since the mid 1990's when i stopped building models. I have always good intention to begin once more but have yet to find the time and motivation since moving to France. I will persevere however and currently have a model of Dick Johnson's 1987 Australian Touring Car Championship Ford Cosworth Sierra sat on the my deck which was sent to me by a wonderful elderly Australian from my days as a magazine publisher in the 1980's. It is painted in the correct colour by him but awaits decals and assembly, so that is the one I intend starting with . Just ordered some MicroSol & MicroSet, fingers crossed.

Another theory, not applicable to me ( ), holds that there's no rest for the wicked. Either way, free time in retirement is often a pipe dream.

I have a few years to go before I actually do retire but I rely on our distinguished retired RRT members to keep the forum going while I am busy!

I indulged myself with the latest releases from Spanish manufacturer Fly. Yesterday these three beauties arrived. Beautiful models! I loved the irreverence of the entire Hesketh team and Harvey Postlethwaite's wonderful 308! Eventually Lord Hesketh's family sat him in a corner and James Hunt lost his competitive zeal, but in its first two years, Hesketh Racing had great success and brought needed refreshment to Formula One.

Unthinkable nowadays but so colourful. Yeez, they must have had fun!

Some great looking models there René, I really like the look of the Hesketh and am sorely tempted to buy one. In those early years of Hesketh Racing I was quite a fan but then James began to get a bit tedious and didn't warm to him at McLaren although one has to say that he drove exceptionally well after winning the 1976 championship. I have the Fly Ford Mk11 that Ken Miles & Lloyd Ruby won the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours, bought it many years ago at a very good price on the well known auction site.

The Hesketh does look great and also runs very well I must say. SRC will also do the Hesketh later this year and it will be more detailed for sure but it will also be much pricier. The Ford is also nice although it did need some tuning to get it running well (typical Fly ). But now it goes like a rocket!

I take it that the SRC version will be a resin body shell and a far more limited edition model. The Fly version you have looks really good and I see it is around in the UK for about £45. I have to hold my hand up to the fact that i have only ever run two of my Fly models and both flew out of the box; the ones in question being the wonderful Porsche 908/2 of Seppi and Brian Redman and a Panos I acquired very cheaply. The Ford Mk11's do look very good, far better than those very quick but poor in accuracy NSR versions. On a slightly different note I have viewed some excellent films from the Nuremberg Toy Fair in which some of the manufacturers were interviewed. All in German but that isn't an issue really; both the main men from Slot It and NSR spoke excellent German. What it is to be multi lingual .

But SRC cars are just way more detailed compared to the Fly cars. Sometimes however they are over-engineered which makes them not always the best runners. But they are beautiful like the 312 T4 or the Yardley McLaren M23 they did.
Talking about expensive slot cars, Checkered Flag Slot Cars have made a resin version of the 312 T5 based on the 312 T4 chassis from SRC. It looks wonderful and very tempting but at a price of €180,- ..... ? That's an expensive toy! PS The Ford was basically fine but was just put together too tight. After loosening up the body screws and a few drops of oil and grease it ran fine.
