Very hot weather on a motorcycle is not something I like very much, especially with all the protective gear on. Hope you enjoy the two races; I couldn't believe that I found them on YouTube as it is far superior to the ITV4 Highlights program which is on sometime this week. Scott is riding extremely well and seems to have recovered his "mojo" after those last two desperate years in MotoGP riding the rubbish he was given. I just hope that he is never tempted back, or maybe a one off when in his thirties and do a Troy Bayliss.

JC, congratulations on Scott's "Grand Slam"! May this pattern continue throughout the season! Many thanks indeed Mikael, I am but an innocent bystander really but is fantastic to see my young cousin doing so well once more. A "Grand Slam" for sure, although he did blot his copybook in race warm up when he inexplicably dropped the bike causing a bit of damage, I think that really focused him for the races.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find the Snetterton races and knew about James Whitham's praise for Scott by watching Race 1. This is brand new and provided by someone seeking subscribers. I hope it continues!

thanks JC, the roads were just superb and every type of road possible was ridden with gusto, sadly I think my bike is crying enough but, it did very well, great bunch of people and one or two great hotels,
Scott is a class act and now has the opportunity to evidence this, I am looking forward to seeing how he gets on at Thruxton, with its sheer speed and scary curves he would probably relish this and Cadwell with it narrow and heart busting jump will be very interesting,
I am wondering that as the BSB is so great what are the other national championships like I wonder, and wouldn't it be interesting to have a 'race of champions' for the winners of each individual series?

Chris, French roads are simply a joy, fabulous surfaces and in most places rural or semi rural have a very small volume of traffic which in both instances is the complete opposite to the UK, or England as it is about to become. Accommodation also normally very good in whatever place you intend staying, many B&B's are very good also. Time to change your bike then? Thruxton will be something new for Scott as will Cadwell Park, the fast and fearsome curves in Hampshire will no doubt be very different to any MotoGP circuit he has previously seen. I think he will be fine. Cadwell should suit him as he is very good at Motocross . I have just read that Glenn Irwin has parted company with JG Speedfit Kawasaki by mutual consent, not surprised, and not sure what was going wrong there. They will probably make Hector Barbera a full time rider now, so another MotoGP refugee into BSB. No other Superbike series of national status comes close to BSB Chris, not sure about Japan these days, at one time it was very good and some riders came over and were very quick and competitive, Kiyo being the stand out in BSB, not forgetting Haga of course.

This weekend we were at the very fast Thruxton circuit in Hampshire based on the old WW11 airfield, that unlike Silverstone has remained very much unchanged and all the better for it.
Watching the racing as always thanks to the outstanding British Eurosport 2 channel the crowd was absolutely huge with the traditional spectator bankings full. James whither remarked that he had never seen the place so full, probably matching the Easter Monday F2 meetings back in the late 1960's early 70's in that respect.
It is truly breathtaking seeing the speeds of the bikes at Thruxton on those fast open sweeping corners, and certainly not the place you would wish the have an accident. Unfortunately young Taz McKenzie had a big spill in Saturday qualifying and fractured his radius bone in the wrist which has eliminated him from further action. I think the wee fella maybe trying a bit too hard as he is coming off the bike a little too often for his own good.
As ever Thruxton is all about tyre management as it is a very abrasive circuit compounded by the massively high speeds; it was always the same with cars from what i can remember. The riders therefore tend to ride within themselves for the first three quarters of the race preserving the tyres as best they can.
The youngest of the Irwin brothers Andrew was in scintillating form on the factory Honda Fireblade and made the now rather long in the tooth machine perform wonders. His race one victory narrowly pipping Scott was warmly received by all watching. Scott had never set eyes on Thruxton previously but adapted well to what must have been a big eye opener; his performance was non the less outstanding as he worked his way through after a bad start from pole position and almost took the win at the last chicane.
race two was disjointed and ended up having two red flag incidents the first for rain and the second when Glen Irwin on his weekend debut on the Taz BMW crashed at the chicane spilling a huge amount of oil after cracking the sump casing. Josh Brooks was outstanding in this race and dominated all three sections followed by Andrew Irwin once more and the always impressive great allrounder Peter Hickman. Scott actually crossed the line second after a ride in which he said he "put it all on the line". However he was forced to cut the chicane and although allowing others to get back in front was penalised and instructed to do the newly instigated "long lap" which he failed to do and was subsequently further punished with a 15 second time penalty. A draconian penalty in reality when one considered it was a very short 8 lap race after the second restart but that is the rule, he wasn't happy afterwards but accepted it for what it was.

The speed of Thruxton would intimidate me, but a great circuit, a great race one and nice defining quote by James Whitham after a superb pass on lap 15: "It looked a bit dodgy by Redding but it's not." That was a great comment Carl, and it did not escape my attention at the time. Another good one was at the beginning of race one when Scott lost may places entering the complex. James Whitham stated "Redding has lost a lot of places there, he obviously did not expect that level of aggression on the first lap", followed by his usual chuckle! One thing that really stands out with Scott's riding is the huge amount of time he can make up in the braking zones, quite unbelievable at times, and again Whitham has commented on the level of confidence he has in the front of the bike. Scott also takes some unusual wide sweeping lines which was a trademark of his when in Moto2. Thruxton is a scarily fast race track and the TV coverage really showed it as such, great camera angles. It was interesting to hear Peter Hickman comment on the grid that a requirement needed was "big b*lls", and that suited him. A shame Peter did not get a win as he was fantastic all weekend, unfortunately his new 2019 BMW only has a "stock" engine at present, for some reason no special race developed units are available from BMW. He therefore lost a lot on the straights as they were down on power.

Finally Race two from Thruxton has been posted on YT in its entirety including all of the stoppages which makes for a pleasant view and gives everyone a chance to experience the excellent British Eurosport presentation team, A very convoluted race and not entirely fair after Redding made what seemed to be adequate amends. Why not penalize the single second of time few riders could properly gauge during a race? Good battle between Andrew Irwin and Peter Hickman, although it allowed Josh Brookes to consolidate his lead. I should add that the stetson awarded to the rider of the day needs a much bigger crown to properly contain the head of a true hero of the west.

I wondered if you would pick up the presentation of the "Dickies" Stetson Carl, it did appear to be rather small but seemed to fit young Andy quite well. Nothing like the Dukes of course which is rather grand if I may say so. Do you know I am not certain if Scott was up on the rules that applied at the time, however he was very critical of the positioning of the long lap as he felt it was in a dangerous location. A more sensible choice of penalty should have been applied at Thruxton especially considering the short length of the twice restarted race, but those are the rules.

I don't understand either. Does a long lap require slowing near where a rider had taken a shortcut?
Most American sanctioning organizations will penalize an errant rider or driver with a "drive through" of pit lane at reduced speed. More serious infractions require stopping for a set amount of time before being released to rejoin the circuit. Scott's criticism of a dangerous rule was perfectly sound. In early Hollywood westerns, cowboy hats were sometimes clownishly large, just one way actual history was distorted by film studio writers and costume designers who'd ridden only on carousels as children.
