The 1000th Formula 1 World Championship event! Amazing to realize how the world and our sport has changed since 1950! But I think it is great the Championship is still alive and kicking after all this time. And thank you Ferrari for competing in every season!
What to expect this weekend? Will Ferrari finally win? The Shanghai track has very long straights which should suite the SF90 very good. But they won't be sitting still in Brackley so expect Mercedes to be strong also. How strong exactly Red Bull Honda is remains to be seen but maybe this race will tell us more. Bring it on!
How it all began...

and Renault Rene, who are starting to make comments that are encouraging, I do think they are capable of success with the right direction and I would very much like to see that - I have gone for Charles as, whilst I do see a resurgent Seb, I just think that hunger isn't as great as it is with Charles, tend to agree that MB will be coming out fighting but,
is it me but are team Willie starting to get closer to the times? i do hold out hope that they will start climbing up that grid

I am going for Sebastian this weekend as this track suits him more than the one in the desert by night. Just seen the practice results and it looks quite possible.

Rene, Very cool film (and soundtrack) featuring a great still of El Maestro at La Source hairpin with Raymond Sommer following. Like other great drivers, Fangio was as smooth as silk.
Cheers, Carl

I loved Martin Brundle's wry comment during second practice that learning Sebastian Vettel has a small head was a very surprising revelation. ... ... Mark Webber would also have thought otherwise...

is there any indication of how L.M / FIA plan to celebrate the 1000th GP of F1 history?
And what would the Racers suggest would be a fitting way to commemorate this milestone (or more appropriately Kilostone)?
It would be awesome to see some of the cars from across that era - maybe the winning cars from the 1st, 100th, 200th, etc race.
It would be nostalgic to some footage of some of the drivers from across the era - may be some of the survivors in person.
It would be sad to see a roll call of all of the Teams who have taken part across the years - some great Teams have come and gone.

really like that idea Jim, but I have no idea if the Liberty Bell will be rung or the FIA will make anything of note, but we'll see, it would be fantastic if we could do something to honour this fantastic achievement
I do have a book that lists all the entrants into F1 and that must be near a thousand as well! - now that would be a post!

My feeling that Mercedes will be strong here was correct. Congrats Carl with your man on pole! Well done Valtteri! I hoped for Ferrari to be closer in qualy but race pace should be good. A good start for one of the red cars and anything can happen. Max was pissed for being passed by Vettel and the Renaults in Q3! Jim, I don't really know what kind of celebrations are planned for the 1000th Grand Prix. Damon Hill did a demonstration in his dad's Monaco winning Lotus 49B but I am not sure if there are more classic cars in China. Nice to see some special helmets though. Albon has a Prince Bira theme and Ricciardo has Jack Brabham's colour scheme, silver with a black stripe. Nice touch are the (painted) stone chippings on the top and front!

For me this great milestone (or as Jim has written Kilostone) in the sports history is somewhat spoilt by the venue of such a major passing of time. This should have been celebrated at one of the great tracks from history, but unfortunately the calendar would/could not allow that, it is almost a random occurrence.
that is a great bit of historical footage René, fortunately there is much about which we all can enjoy. The other evening I viewed something far earlier on YouTube which featured the history from 1918 onwards, a Shell film by all accounts. Fabulous narration by a very English voice of far off days, and the footage was fantastic with Grand Prix cars on unsurfaced roads in the earlier days. I had to stop watching due to the hour, by the time we reached the early 1930's, but superb material.

At the inaugural Formula One race in Long Beach in 1976, an enjoyable feature of the weekend was a commemoration just as Jim suggests. I was able to watch from the top row of the Turn 4 grandstand, behind and directly below into the vintage event paddock, as Juan Manuel Fangio climbed into his W196 and put on the helmet he always wore. Others driving were Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Denis Hulme, Carroll Shelby, Richie Ginther, Maurice Trintignant, with Innes Ireland covering his eyes in fear as he rode with the oldest of the greats, Rene Dreyfus, in a Bugatti T51. It was only a demonstration, more like a fast parade, a restriction that annoyed Fangio and many spectators, but was otherwise very cool!

I haven't watched qualifying but having seen the times etc it looks very much like Noah's Ark, is that indicative of a poor circuit somewhat like Barcelona which is very car dependant. Oh! for the days where a genius can make up for a poor car, or simply demonstrate his class come what may.
Not an ideal scenario to celebrate the 1000th Formula One race.

It may not be long before the Chinese are able to celebrate whatever they choose in the grave new world to come. A consolation will be Donald Trump and Theresa May as scullery drudges at the Chopstix Noodle Bar.

I hadn't considered the idea that the two by two qualifying reflects that the drivers can't make a difference. I was quite impressed that the times were so tight (between the drivers in each team) and that we're seeing the absolute performance of each car.
