I watched qualifying at both Paul Ricard and Road America. IndyCar's is better organized, always less predictable and normally more exciting, all of which held true today. The cars aren't as sophisticated or fast, but the organizers aren't anal-retentive and the racing is better. autoweek.com/article/indycar/indycar-road-america-qualifying-results-colton-herta-makes-history Carl, I missed qualy but I am certainly going to watch the race. Great result for Colton Herta, he's a real sensation and could have a bigger career than his dad. I read it was close with Rossi who is so fast everywhere this year. Newgarden steady as ever. This is always a good race on one of the greatest tracks in the world!

As mentioned elsewhere I watched some of the qualification from Road America last evening and what a contrast to the sterility of F1 and Paul Ricard. One of the truly great race tracks (Road America) and the driving was outstanding as was the spectacle.
having had the two weeks of the Isle Of Man TT races and then the brilliant British Superbikes on the full GP circuit at Brands Hatch, and now Road America it just makes F1 on these current circuits seem very tame and unimpressive. I am not suggesting that F1 visit the IOM but the powers that be (whoever they may be) come to their senses and get the racing back on proper race circuits and get rid of these stupid "trucks' they currently use.
One final observation of mine was the absolutely wonderful pits at Road America, just as they were and should be.

As already mentioned in the F1 thread I really enjoyed this race and what a great victory for Alexander Rossi. Not because he has a ridiculously dominant car but because his team did the best job overnight to prepare his car and because Alexander drove absolutely faultless and sublime. If he continues ths form he can win the title. But Josef Newgarden also looks very strong this year. When he can't win he still brings in the solid results. Herta's race was a bit erratic after he lost the lead to Rossi in the first corner. Scott Dixon had an impressive fight back to fifth. What a joy to watch after the F1 bore fest.

The Champ Car* event in Toronto was very good and became tense and exciting towards the end as Scott Dixon relentlessly closed on Simon Pagenaud, to no avail as Will Power needed to do something stupid again and a full course yellow slowed everyone on the last lap. It was an ordinary Indy event, not as good as usual and certainly nowhere as exciting as The British Grand Prix, a turnabout of the norm. It was noteworthy for the amazing stupidity of Will Power, Roger Penske's loose cannon, who had also crashed for no apparent reason on the first lap, and that of announcer Leigh Diffey, who has very little to say and never stops saying it.
* I prefer this old designation. It just sounds better than IndyCar.

Carl, could we possibly say that Mr Diffey talks a lot but says nothing, not unlike Croft . JC

Carl, unfortunately I missed the race. Not that I forgot, I tuned in on time on the racing chanel that broadcasts all the races but there was only a replay of the British Grand Prix! The tv guide said Indycar Toronto but nothing there! I wasn't happy as I pay for that chanel...

On that channel, do you hear the NBC announcers, or are the races broadcast in Dutch?

No it's in Dutch but the presenter is very good. No hysterics and very knowledgeable. Interviews with drivers or team members are live in English of course.

The popularity of Max Verstappen in The Netherlands is obvious for everyone to see but there's another Dutch talent making a name for himself in the higher echelons of motorsport, namely Rinus van Kalmthout, aka Rinus Veekay in the US.
Rinus is currently racing in Indy Lights and has three wins to his name and is second in the standings so a serious candidate for the title. The top three in Indy Lights are eligible to race in Indycars. Rinus is supervised by Arie Luyendyk, among others.
18 year old Van Kalmthout is set to test a Ed Carpenter Racing Dallara-Chevrolet at Portland on the 7th of August. I am very curious how he does. I have the feeling he could be a sensation.

Cool! I hope he does well. IndyLights isn't televised this year, a shame because many great talents have emerged over the years.
Arie Luyendyk has the distinction of the fastest ever lap at Indianapolis, 239.260mph in practice in 1996 and the fastest ever qualifying lap (therefore official) of 237.498 the same year.
He's also one of the few to walk away unaided after fighting AJ Foyt

The short 7/8ths mile oval race at Iowa Speedway was almost rained out, starting shortly before 11 pm local time, when corn farmers were sound asleep. My grandfather grew corn in neighboring Illinois, so full respect.
Josef Newgarden, whose crew got his car perfectly dialed in overnight after a disappointing qualifying, dominated. Scott Dixon came from 16th and a lap down at one point (with 20 second race laps at 165mph, it's easy to fall behind) to finish second in a roller-coaster race.
The race ended in the wee hours of Sunday morning with plenty of fans still in their seats enjoying the spectacle of high speeds and close racing. A well-designed short oval allows every driver to always be in sight.
