Michael van der Mark became the first Dutch rider to win a WSBK race and not only that he scored a double race victory at last weekends round at Donington Park.
I have not been really enthused by WSBK over the past few years as it just did not have that special buzz about it that the great years of Foggy; Slight; Edwards; Corser and Bayliss to name but a few. Who also can forget the truly brilliant Steve Hislop bringing his BSB Ducati to the Donington round as a wold card entry and annihilate the lap record leaving WSBK riders shaking their heads in disbelief.
Today that is not possible as the WSBK rules are very different to that of BSB with the World Series allowing things like traction control and more sophisticated electronics, whereas BSB bans the lot leaving it all down to the rider, as it should be.
However thanks to a superb coverage by the Free to View UK Quest Sport Channel all of this weekends activity was shown, made even better by largely having the superb Eurosport BSB presentation team along with the excellent Freddie Spencer. Not a big fan of the Eurosport commentator as I much prefer dear old Jack Burnacle who along with his occasional mistakes al la Murray Walker enjoys wonderful banter with the admirable James Whitam. It was a superb weekend of motorcycle racing covered by Quest and really put the so called Monaco GP in perspective, which was truly dire with its sole purpose to overexpose the rich and privileged with all of its obscenity.
It was so good to see the dominant Kawasaki and Ducati teams get beaten by the "factory" Yamaha team, who finally seem to have got the R1 working to a level that it should. Michael van Der Mark was outstanding in both races and was a very popular winner as he is universally liked within the paddock. Great for Holland to have a world class winner once more, as it has been many years since the days of the man in white Will Hartog.
