A general thread about Indy. Indians or Injuns (as Marion Morrison called them ), we love them just the same. And I'm a Hoosier at heart (Bob Knight, John Mellencamp and all that...). 1968. Great pic, very atmospheric.

i was extremely fortunate to visit Indianapolis for the 500 in 96, a memory c/w newspapers from that day that i will forever treasure - but the above makes me wonder what could have been but for yet another terrible tragedy

Great thread topic Lucio, especially with the month of May’s festival about to get started. I would absolutely love to visit Indy one day for the 500 as I’m a big admirer of US racing (NASCAR the exception). Lucky man to have graced the 96 race Chris, it must have been a wonderful experience.
Here’s a link to the ‘Power and the Glory’ episode about the 500 we discussed on another thread recently. Worth watching for the Rick Mears snippets alone, what a brilliant driver he was......a lost American World Champion perhaps.

Great pic, very atmospheric. Lucio, Very cool! I remember the race wasn't televised that year and I went with others to a closed circuit broadcast at a theatre. Eventual winner Bobby (the dumb Unser) is in the #3 Eagle, his boss Dan Gurney further behind in #48 and Graham Hill contests 5th position in the second Lotus turbine. Graham Hill, Denis Hulme and Jochen Rindt were the only foreign drivers. These days the ratio is about half. There's a great story about Jochen Rindt at Indianapolis. The track was dampened by rain during practice and everyone but Rindt came in. He drove one or two more laps and his spectacular four-wheel drifts through Turn 4 had normally jaded pit crews running to watch. -Carl

Jamie, what made that trip even more special was the fact I was on a freebie with an American Oil company and had access anywhere, a memorable trip and one i will always treasure - which prompts the thought, maybe a new thread? I have never been to Monza nor Monaco, In truth I don't fancy Monaco so much but may look at the historic race perhaps and following Andrew Frankel's suggestion to go to something like a saloon car race at Monza - mmm, maybe time for a new list here?

Or was it someone else?

He did not. He rightly felt the tremendous speeds and unforgiving walls made it too dangerous. On the other hand, he didn't understand why they stopped for rain. I think he'd never seen anything like it, and his two years there weren't enough to acclimate.

Chris Amon was the other who couldn't adapt- I reckoned Jochen a top-notch driver but it goes to show why he revered a certain quiet Scot so much

Great picture! Dirt and oil on every drag producing surface. The basic Eagle chassis was designed for several race series, including Indy and Formula 5000. The be-all philosophy was counterproductive in the end.

Do you know that is the first time that I have realised this Eagle had outboard front shocks, always thought that they had inboard units as on the original cars. Interesting to note the very high screen surround and what appears to be a wind deflector type screen as pioneered by Colin Chapman on the Lotus 25.
Isn't this the car that featured in the film "Winning" with Paul Newman.

I remember seeing Helio Castroneves do well in Indy Lights at the then California Speedway (now Auto Club Speedway), Roger Penske's near duplicate of Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the site of the old Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, a city notable only for being near Riverside and Ontario. Qualifying for the Indy 500 is all about prolonging the drama, each car by itself for four laps, although entirely understandable for reasons of safety. So far, although the drama will be repeated tomorrow, Castroneves is on pole by a good margin and all four of Penske's drivers are near the front. The rear wings at Indy look like elongated boomerangs. Cool!

It's looking close. Helio is like Rossi in MotoGP, he doesn't lose speed with age. Just amazing. Also good job by Danica. I hope Newgarden will get closer to the front and so far a disappointing season for Rahal. I was always a fan of his father.

You and I are alone for the moment in the cyber-grandstand for Indy, although Chris and Jamie have expressed an interest and may join us later.
Penske has placed seven cars, directly and indirectly, in the first three rows. Pole sitter Ed Carpenter has a working agreement with Team Penske that has tremendously benefited his team. All three Ed Carpenter Racing entries join the four Penske drivers at the front of the grid. Sebastien Bourdais and Scott Dixon did well to intrude into Penske's domain.
Roger Penske turned his back on Formula One years ago because of the extreme disadvantages prescribed for new teams and Formula One has suffered as a result.
Cheers, Carl
